A good article and take on things. This reminds me of global warming. We all agree it is happening to a degree but the evidence is all over the map -- and very little of it seems correlated to CO2. It fits far better with cycles of the sun and even the use of CFCs in aerosols (stopped 15-20 years ago). But if you say anything against the orthodoxy, watch out!

I actually agree with both sides here. There is a reason why STEM fields attract men, and disattracts women. It is both cultural issues and biological issues.
I applaud pushes to make the STEM fields less sexist. I work in STEM, and I can tell you that there is rampant sexism. It is frightening to see. I had a boss that made one of my female coworkers go to a strip club! She refused to file a complaint too, as she didn't want to be a squeaky wheel.

Sure, but you can get why that might cause work place problems.
She quit about 18 months later.

My wife works in STEM and went to a strip club last week.
I told her that probably wasn't the wisest choice. LOL

let's be fair.

Eh, I had a different boss that told me to only hire hot chicks.
And I had another boss that slept with a woman that worked for him.
Not all managers in the STEM field are sexist assholes, but I have run into quite a few.
eta: I haven't had a non stem job since grad school though, and never a professional one.

He most sexist behavior I've seen in my career was the HR department at a solar company. All women (hired by a woman) and clearly had a preference for... women.

well now I am self employed.
Sexism is a real problem in computer fields. And I worked for a company where the CEO was notoriously sexist, and then he hired someone to run the company that was fired for sexism.
Defacto accepted culture.

How Orwellian. The thought police have become our media, universities and corporations. The orthodoxy of egalitarianism must be followed. All dissenters will be purged.

Where I work now the HR department is 100% female.
Where I worked before the HR department was 100% female.
Obviously there is blatant sexism going on here and something must be done!

I was just providing anecdotes. Plus computer related disciplines dwarfs most of the engineering fields for female graduates.

Yes, exactly. I'm sure there is sexism in STEM organizations, but are you really going to tell me that it's just so much more rampant than other industries?
You may say "well, the STEM industries have historically been dominated by men." Sure they have, but so has pretty much every professional industry because it used to be that men were overwhelmingly the primary breadwinners of the household. What % of news reporters today do you think is comprised of females? The answer may surprise you.
Anyway, STEM organizations being sexist may explain why women don't stay in STEM jobs, but it still doesn't really explain lack of interest.
Unless you want to try and convince me that young girls and women who really want to go into STEM are being consistently and overwhelmingly dissuaded from doing so because of sexism.

I don't know. I have experienced that, the amount of sexism I found was appalling.

Actually it does, as they experience this sexism in school and internships.

I think that is at least in part why they don't. Not the only reason though, by any means.
