Do you think choosing something with such an obvious visible impact was just happenstance or deliberate?
Based on what I read, they targeted Colonial's back-office, apparently a poorly protected, easy target. Colonial, in an abundance of caution, chose to shut in the line. The group seemed surprised by the outcome:

So far, intelligence officials said, all of the indications are that it was simply an act of extortion by the group, which first began to deploy such ransomware last August and is believed to operate from Eastern Europe, possibly Russia. There was some evidence, even in the group’s own statements on Monday, that suggested the group had intended simply to extort money from the company, and was surprised that it ended up cutting off the main gasoline and jet fuel supplies for the Eastern Seaboard.

“We are apolitical, we do not participate in geopolitics, do not need to tie us with a defined government and look for our motives,” it said in a statement posted on its website. “Our goal is to make money and not creating problems for society.”
The group seemed somewhat surprised that its actions resulted in closing a major pipeline and suggested that perhaps it would avoid such targets in the future.
“From today we introduce moderation and check each company that our partners want to encrypt to avoid social consequences in the future,” the group said, though it was unclear how it defined “moderation.”“We are apolitical, we do not participate in geopolitics, do not need to tie us with a defined government and look for our motives,” it said in a statement posted on its website. “Our goal is to make money and not creating problems for society.”

I think they want to extort money which they have been doing without creating an international incident, which is probably bad for business. I think this was an unintended outcome.

Well, if that's where they're at, it is a non-hostile nation. Interpol or whatever might be able to make an apprehension.
I thought you were suggesting it might be in relatively hostile areas.
It has been extremely difficult to extract criminals from Eastern Europe.

I don't have a NYTimes subscription. You have a link to these peoples' website? That's fascinating.

I thought the same...I don't think I want to try and find and visit that site.

The NYTimes didn't link it? Now I'm forced to be suspicious about it all.

As is typical of how the mainstream media presents what they wish to present, the story here of
5MILLION RANSOM PAID in crypto
Should really be
5million ransom PAID IN CRYPTO
If you wish to get rid of alternative to a currency you are violently debasing, then first demonize that alternative

Hackers are a huge problem for companies. Wish they would do more about it but as he stated most of this shite is international affairs so the jurisdiction is a little gray

Trump would have sent a company of Paratroopers from the 173rd Airborne Brigade Stationed in Italy to kick in doors and make an example of these nerds.
Of course the braindead in Chief is negotiating with a literal act of war. Jill's husband is a moron.
