I don't know why you think this seems far-fetched? More people didn't vote for him than did, and those who didn't vote for him are generally not going to approve of him.

Rasmussen shows him at 54% approval as of today. FWIW, survey consisted of 500 telephone interviews of likely voters. Was 53% yesterday.
