Nope. Just someone that doesn’t live in the past.

Take solar panels as an example..
quote:

The Section 201 solar tariffs began at 30% in 2018, and ramped down to 25% in 2019, 20% in 2020 and 15% in 2021.
Biden just moved to hike panels to 50%, BTW…

So surely we have lots of US Domestic production, right? Nah.

They didn’t even bother to put the US as its own line, but lumped in “North America”. Unfortunately that includes Mexico too. Still doesn’t even show up, yet (last column) we are significant consumers of panels.

Who’s paying the tariffs?

People so stupid that they can't see solar is a boondoggle. I don't feel bad for them.

Unfortunately that wasn’t the question.

If us manufactures can compete, they will make the panels.

US manufacturers can't compete due to excessive government regulations, labor unions, and an antiquated tax system. In most cases it simply does not make sense to manufacture products in America anymore. Instead of tariffs, we need to fix the tax and regulation system in the US. Reciprocal tariffs are necessary and good, but protectionist tariffs always lead to higher prices for consumers.

I agree with you. But I think we need fair trade deals in addition to deregulation.

Imagine if GMC and Ford could grow their revenue by 40 or 50% by getting China and Europe to come down on the 1 sided trade deals.

As I stated, reciprocal tariffs are good and necessary. That is not what most people on this board, or Trump, are advocating for. They are advocating for protective tariffs, and tariffs as a revenue vehicle that is a very different thing.

Imagine posting in this thread that you believe American products should be tariffed by other countries, but we shouldn’t do the same.

Can you get any more anti-American?

President Trump says he is delaying some tariffs on Chinese imports ahead of the Christmas season.

“We’re doing this for the Christmas season,” Trump says, “just in case some of the tariffs would have an impact on U.S. customers.”

This is because you don't immediately see the benefits of tariffs. A new manufacturing plant doesn't appear the day after a tariff is enacted. It's natural to increase slightly at first. It stings to clean a fresh wound, but you do it for the overall health of the system.

The benefit of tariffs is the increased domestic output which ultimately increases purchasing power. This is why Trump delayed the tariffs, and he did it at a time when people spend more money to lessen any initial potential impact.

You people against tariffs are so myopic. You only look at a single aspect of tariffs and completely ignore everything else. A billionaire long-time CEO of a financial company says tariffs are useful, and you are trying to tell us he doesn't understand economics. I know who I trust more in this situation.

Milei should have a chat w/ Trump about tariffs.

If we want more jobs here, the obvious way is to massively reduce the ungodly regulatory state we live under. Making trade more expensive doesn't make any sense at all.

Capital would flow into America like crazy if compliance costs (including taxes) were massively reduced.

Using tariffs as a 'bargaining chip' is about as effective as a mugger coming up, pointing a gun and saying "I'm not going to shoot you, his gun is unloaded, but you should give me your wallet'

Did you listen to the clip? Cause the mugger in your scenario is other nations, and we have been giving them our wallet knowing the gun is unloaded. If done right we have a loaded gun, point it back at the mugger, and take his wallet.

Tariffs is a tool in the box to use. If not tariffs, people need to tell us what will for sure work better. Things need to change and we need to change course. That we know

Sure that would be huge, but Congress is mostly involved there. Harder to get done quickly when more hands in the cookie jar. Trump using tarrifs is a tool he has the ability to use out of the gate. He needs to take advantage of all of those tools he can use without Congress.

The best is Becky saying "wow, this is the best explanation"

Trump should pay Lutnick to go out on tour for him the next 3 weeks and give that explanation since Trump can't.
