Higgins is weird, but he does bring up something that I have wondered. What authority does the governor have to tell business they cant operate?

Without watching it:

Let me guess...Makes it about him and his theatrics. Acts all big, bad, and bold. Ill-informed and misplaced.

He's a jackass!

In Louisiana, your choices are usually a moron with a good voting record, a race pimping communist moron with a bad voting record, or an old as dirt and corrupt as heck ex-democrat turned republican who can form coherent sentences but stabs your principles in the back every time it actually matters.

So why the frick would anyone continue to live there? The product sucks, it's broken and will never be fixed.

States are considered sovereigns. Unlike the Federal Government, they have blanket police power. Unless the Constitution gives power to the federal government, the feds don’t have that power. Unless the Constitution takes power away from state governments, they do have that power. The 14th Amendment takes the restraints placed on Congress in the Bill of Rights and Civil War Amendments and makes them enforceable on states. So, violating the rights to freedom of religion, freedom of association, speech, jury trial, unreasonable searches and seizures, due process, etc can be enforced against states that abridge those freedoms.

However, who can hear a suit against a state government overstepping those rights if there are no courts open to hear them? Fed courts in Louisiana are closed. The Governor controls the National Guard units in his state. In Louisiana, all the mayors and local governments are considered inferior arms of the state government, so the Governor can run right over them. The businesses are licensed to operate by the local government and often by state licensing regimes as well. Governor pretty much has absolute power at the moment.

Because despite its weather, crime, “is _____ trashy” threads, drive-inn fisticuffs, and incompetent government, it’s still a unique, affordable, and fun place to live. Plus, I have deep roots here with a large extended family and lots of friends.

I want to move to St George. Not much else interests me. But I’m a Higgins fan.

Probably none. It’s a proclamation. Not a statute.

We are putting millions of people put of work for months at a time to stop the spread of a disease which, on paper, isn’t extraordinarily dangerous, not to mention that the people most at risk are people who already aren’t working (retired folks in nursing homes)!

I'm not going to say you or Mr Higgins or all those stating that these precautionary measures are not the worth the economic impact are wrong. But its a difficult call by our governor and one in which Mr. Higgins and yourself seem confident was wrong.

My mother died of complication due to flu and other immune system related issues last year. It was brutal to watch her deteriorate over the course of several months. At the end she was on ventilation but her body just couldnt fight it. She was made comfortable and her family was allowed to be by side as she passed. I imagine now 1000's of families,if not more, not being allowed to be by their loved ones and they die alone in some tent hospital that unlike my mom, may have been able to be saved if they had access to a ventilator. They may not even be able to be made pain free as they pass and may have to struggle to take their last gasps as fluids fill their lungs.

Is this avoidable..IDK... is it the price we must pay or the risk we must take to live in a free society? Is the poor single mother who will go without a paycheck and have not enough to pay rent, feed her child, pay bills. Is her misery worst than those who may lose loved ones? I dont think anyone right now can say definitively one way or another. Maybe a year or two down the road once all the data is examined we can say the government response was to much or not enough but for now I wish the political grandstanding would cease.
