I'm not a TN Lawyer but I will post something from a TN lawyer that seems relevant.
Self-Defense in Tennessee: When Can It Be Used in Violent Crime?
The crucial variable that is likely going to doom him is the proportionality aspect (which is what I searched for to find this article).

Legally this case may or may not be a quagmire, I am not a criminal defense attorney or prosecutor, so I don’t really know.
Man code, however, dictates if you antagonize enough random men on the street, you will eventually get your arse whooped and you will have deserved it.
However, you don’t deserve to be killed over calling someone a name, which is, at the end of the day, what this guys schtick is.
But he seems to be a formidable guy himself so while the beating appears rather severe, it could be interpreted as the appropriate amount of violence.
Then there is the angle of if the shot guy was “hunting” the idiot for some type of bounty. I’m not even sure the retard called the shot guy, or anyone he was with, any names. Then it would revert back to two idiots met on the street and one was trying to get away.
At the end of the day, I’m leaning towards upholding man code. Attempted murder, however, due to the bounty, might be a bit harsh. I’d think any felony conviction that puts him in prison for 2-3 years and prevents such an antagonistic retard from carrying again in the future, would suffice.
ETA: Having only ever heard of this guy after his arrest, I’ve only watched a couple of short videos. In one he is with a bunch of retards walking up to random strangers, all in uniform and waving their flag and screaming “white power” and throwing Nazi salutes and doing the goose stepping thing. He and his cohorts were all tough looking dudes and brawls broke out. The other was of him having a thoughtful and calm discussion about the use of the word with a random non agitated black guy on the street. They apparently came to an understanding and basically hugged it out and went their separate ways. Had he built his reputation on seeking interactions such as the latter, one could argue his intention was to have legitimate debate. In my opinion, the former eclipses any other intent.

It’s probably best to just walk away these days. Things are just different now. I’m physically fit know how to fight and have been in more physical altercations than I would like to admit in my high school and college and even after college days. Is it really worth it over being called a name? Just move on. Better yet just avoid events, areas, etc that have low IQ people in them.

I think it’s absolutely insane but par for the course with this place that many think it’s completely defensible for this total trash bag to go around instigating and getting in black people’s faces yelling every racist word possible to them.
