I really want to gloat over this China news but I'm afraid killing China's economy might become a murder-suicide case.

All they have to do is play fair. They can keep selling their cheap stuff here if they open their markets and stop stealing from us. I don't see how that hurts them.

Oops.

Not like the signs weren’t there. They have been doing unnecessary work over there to keep people employed.

The ghost cities built in the middle of nowhere come to mind, as they put billions into infrastructure that no one is using because they had to keep the economy churning along.

OUr economies are completely intertwinned. There is no chance a slowdown in one doesn't impact the other.

The difference is that we can find cheap shite from elsewhere.

How many other places can China sell that volume of goods to?

Meanwhile Xi continues to press towards a more Mao style of communism. Great work Xi. Kill all western influence in your country that has made its economy explode over the last 15 years.

Trade Wars and Communism are putting a hurting on China.

I think we can cut the cord a lot easier than they can. The evidence is right in front of your nose. Ours is doing well while theirs is suffering.

It's a simple fix. Stop being Wo Fat from Hawaii Five O 1968 and start playing fair.

I'm not disagreeing.

Hurt is an interesting thing politically.

In my view, it is indisputable that over time, REALLY free trade benefits all parties.

The problem is that when a nation of a Billion people decides to not go that route, they can be somewhat successful for long enough that the "over time" part of my prior sentence seems irrelevant to the citizens of their nation and ours.

It's a political challenge to say the least.

It's nothing but a decision. They have more power to make it than our pols do.

They could prosper enormously, indeed all of Asia would. Things here go back to how they were, and we get to come in there and compete on a fair basis. No one really loses.

Sure, in fact, a lot of the low cost manufacturing (like textiles) have already left china. China is moving up the manufacturing chain and producing higher value goods like cell phones.

Europe. S. America. Canada. etc.

If the US decides to frick China, it can be done. But as russian said, its a murder suicide. Our GDP growth is anemic, and any stuter to that will tip us into recession where as china is seeing 5-10% GDP growth. Knocking a few pts off will hurt but it might be more painful for those in america who are on the edge.

I don't think we have a choice. Things could not go on as they had been. People had been taking advantage of us without a doubt and we are doing just fine through all of this despite the handwringing from the doom and gloomers and the doubters.

Stay the course and I believe it will work out.

I was a Geography major and don’t understand world Econ one bit. So this is a genuine request for insight.

From about 8 years old to 18 years old, i always wondered why the Far East was allowed to tariff the US, but we were not going to tariff them.

My Social Studies teacher told us that it would hurt American consumers for the US to tariff these imports.

I would ask why do t the leaders of foreign nations think tariff on our goods would not hurt their consumers. He would shrug his shoulders.

I kind of forgot about tariffs but now feel the same way I did when I was younger. If they tariff us, we tariff them. It’s only fair.

I also see it as a positive that our nations Econ performs better than chinas. Would that be considered true as well? I hear all the time that we need China’s Econ to be strong as we are now too dependent on theirs.

Discuss.
