We should agree to withdraw from Korea, maintaining our presence for the time being in Okinawa in exchange for China removing the idiot and the nuclear threat of North Korea from the region.
Looks like a win-win to me.
giving up too much. I agree its better than nuclear war, but not by a lot.
We can't just run back if we find that China is moving on South Korea.
You can't count on the next regime respecting previous agreements.
Now is now. its all you get.
I represent to you that China will do it and they were just paid.
Trump gave up his 45% tariff. China will handle Kim.

Sounds great to me as a grand overall idea - but the devils would be int he details.
A unified - and independent - Korea would have to be established, along with NATO-like agreements.
A reunified Korea cannot become a China - or Russia - puppet.

Honestly we should go to one air base...one army post after he is removed...
I'm not an imperialism guy, but our "welcome" presence means something

The consensus seems to be that we probably should have just let the Chinese have the peninsula back in the day and saved all the lives and money....seems about right. Seems like the commies are winning in Asia....

I don't agree with leaving South Korea, or even Japan, for that matter. It's our foothold in East Asia. While I'm a non-interventionalist, I think maintaining a strategic footing in South Korea, Japan, Germany, and to an extent Italy and Poland gives us the opportunity for a quick strike against a nation or group who acts against us.
However, I really wish the North Korean people were capable of reclaiming their own country back from the Kim dynasty with outside logistical support from China and the US, but I don't see it. The unification of the Korean Peninsula as the Republic of Korea (what SK is right now), would be amazing.

I like this, I would only add that SK and China should divvy up NK with the border being a straight line between Anju and Yonghung

Which they repaid when they sent 325,000 troops to Vietnam for us. A lot of whom died there. Afghanistan and Iraq? Yeah they sent troops there too.
So that means we should tie their security to ours into perpetuity regardless of the geopolitical context? Keep tens of thousands of troops stationed there forever? In that case, why not just incorporate South Korea into the United States? Hell, we don't even monitor our own borders with such security.
quote:
I hate to piss on your parade but South Korea has been a solid ally for decades now. Sure, abandon them to the tender mercies of China now.
No one has suggested they haven't been or they should "be abandoned." But if the entire reason for our being there is satisfactorily resolved, then we should leave. Or is it your contention we should stay forever barring the breakup of China? Why don't we deploy troops to every friendly country in the region to protect them from China?
quote:
That is just fricking brilliant. Because the last time we turned our back on the whole god damn world WWII broke out. But hey, lets do it again and start with one of our most solid military allies how about!
False premise. The British Empire was the hegemonic power in that period and their actions actually resulted in WWII.
It's also just a stupid comparison in general however as the global dynamic is nothing like it was in WWI or WWII, but WWII analogies are so fun and sensational!
quote:
Lets just ignore one of our biggest trading partners and one of the few countries in the world that has consistently backed out play.
Removing tens of thousands of combat troops and war guarantees under the conditions that the fundamental threat has been resolved is not "ignoring" anything. We would still have trade and close relations with South Korea whether we have thousands of our troops on their borders or not.
So chalk that up to another false premise.
quote:
Some of y'all are too dumb to pass on your defective genes.
So people who want a peaceful resolution to the Korea situation that allows the United States to bring troops home, South Korea to be free and secure, and to deescalate tensions in the region for the foreseeable future are stupid because they don't share your differing views? Your views that seem to suggest that the mere presence of China next to Korea on the map (which won't ever change btw) requires US forces on the peninsula forever? Let me break some news to you, you aren't nearly as smart as you think you are.

That would be a win-win, but it will never happen. There is a greater chance of me winning the lottery, Nick Saban leaves Bama for LSU, democrats regain they sanity, and HRC going to prison than there is of the US pulling out of a country.

With the exception of Tibet the communist in China have not displayed much imperialism
Historically, they consider themselves to be the "Middle Kingdom" and really just want to be IN the Chinese territory. Recently, they have become a Global trade power, but other than that, their foreign "imperialist" tenancies have been to keep to themselves (outside of the Cold War Era).

I'd love to know how you've come to the determination that that is any kind consensus, here or elsewhere. Your little Marxist ears hear what they want to hear. More accurately put, you lie about what you're hearing in a pathetic attempt to push a narrative.

1. Nobody other than your commie arse thinks that is a consensus.
2. Nobody other than your commie arse thinks that would be a good idea.
3. Communism is not winning. Communism is dying a slow death in Asia. China & Vietnam slowly but surely moving away from a traditional communist economies, & the only true communist economy is Asia is North Korea and they are literally starving to death while there dear reader is one twinkie away from a diabetic coma.

China said Trump is lying about "Bombers on high alert".
China is also still importing NK coal.
Don't think they are going to do anything about Kim Jong Un.

I suspect it would mean a Chinese puppet installed as leader and that would be ok with me.
What do you think Kim is? You think he's just doing all this crazy stuff on his own? China is behind this and they have already won huge dividends from it. Trump has dropped literally all of his campaign promises about trade with China in exchange for nothing but a vague assurance that they will "help" to take care of the North Korea situation (oh, and some lucrative trademarks for DJT and Ivanka). They aren't going to give up the tool that gets them anything they want from Trump the idiot, and even if they did, their next puppet would be no different. They want a volatile Korea so they can make Trump their bitch again whenever they need to.
