Wow. If we do that why would any ally ever trust us again?

It's more that they're a lot, lot slower to up the ante because they're the ones that hsve to pay the price in a war.

If we did what? Fight a 3 year war that cost us over 50,000 dead and then hold the line on your national defense for 70 fricking years? OMG, how can any ally trust us!

Apparently deploying troops to aid in an ally's deterrence is like creating a new government agency. Easy to start and impossible to end.

I'm pretty sure South Korea will not be supporting this.

You do realize the social and economic gap between the North and South is like The US and a red ant mound. Who's going to lead? The South? China? Whats left of the Northern army leadership? My guess in you replace 1 dictatorship with another. And in that case the known enemy is much better then the unknown enemy. Korea is a bad situation, with nukes. that's why there are no easy solutions.

There is that whole Taiwan thing, too.

However, I was thinking the same thing a few hours ago.
(Can't remember what brought it to my mind, though)

If left to it's own control, Korea could thrive. Let the South Korean people go in and develop. It would be a great investment opportunity for China and the U.S.

Vietnam, The Philippines, Malaysia, Brunei, and Taiwan say "Hi!" from the South China Sea.

The South Koreans would be very happy Kim's family was removed and that the US was gone I suspect. They have trade relations with China now. They hate the Japanese more than the Chinese.

Invaded? No. there are other ways to usurp independent entities, though. Taiwan was, for all intents and purposes independent, and most recognized them as such. The Chinese held their breath and the rest of the world gave up, more or less. If Taiwan wants to be independent, let them. And if California wants to be independent, then let them, too.

I'm easy to get along with.

The Taiwan thing is not black and white. We like the idea of a small island nation poking China in the eye, but the idea that this is historically part of China is not unfounded.

The "nine-dash-line" thing is the better example of imperialism.

maybe you didn't notice their recent attempts to exert some control over the South China Sea, the most busy shipping lane in the world?

I'm calling bullshite on this one. As for China, they may or may not have plans for expansion, but we sure as hell don't need to make it easy for them if they do.

Honest question: Have you ever been to South Korea? Those people work in a dig at the North like a Barner does at Gump.

"What time is it?"

"It's 11:30 and North Korea still sucks and they're dumb and they started the war and we have to be in constant readiness to kick their arse because they keep kidnapping and raiding and digging tunnels and..."

'm not so sure you're right and tough shite for them if you are. We spilled lots of blood and spent lots of resources and energy guaranteeing their sovereignty.

Which they repaid when they sent 325,000 troops to Vietnam for us. A lot of whom died there. Afghanistan and Iraq? Yeah they sent troops there too.

I hate to piss on your parade but South Korea has been a solid ally for decades now. Sure, abandon them to the tender mercies of China now.

That is just fricking brilliant. Because the last time we turned our back on the whole god damn world WWII broke out. But hey, lets do it again and start with one of our most solid military allies how about!

Lets just ignore one of our biggest trading partners and one of the few countries in the world that has consistently backed out play.

Some of y'all are too dumb to pass on your defective genes.

Why do you think China has any desire to harm South Korea?

We can't change history in the Far East any more than we can in the Middle East.

Both the Koreans and the Chinese should be glad we have never let Japan militarize again.

China didn't wreck Hong Kong when it reverted back to Chinese ownership and they have no reason or desire to have a war with South Korea.
