China may be willing to accept an economic downturn to hurt Trump and win a better deal

“Many investors have expressed the view that China is prepared to accept an economic downturn (and thus a global economic downturn) to prevent President Trump’s reelection,” says Naka Matsuzawa, Nomura’s chief rates strategist.
China’s high-stakes retaliation measures, which could put Chinese businesses at risk, are aiming to diminish Trump’s chances in 2020 so China could eventually have a Democratic leader to negotiate an easier deal.
They want a democrat to win so bad
Sorry IBChinaman, but once Trump wins election in 2020, he will be unhindered and will take china to the woodshed.

The problem is if these anti-trade war types got what they wanted and Trump caved to China, they would attack Trump for being a weak negotiator and terrible at making deals and weak on China

I wouldn't be surprised. Those that are in power to make that decision won't feel one effect of the slowdown. It's the citizens that will.
I suppose the same would be true here, or at least similar

China knows all they have to do is wait 15 months and they can be dealing with a pussy in the white house. At least they are hoping that is the case. If they make our economy look bad enough then it increases these odds.
Another MAGA victory will frick China big time

this has been obvious to everyone for the last year. they are hoping they can withstand another 12 months or so then get a pussy democrat who will go back to letting them walk all over us.

Who couldn’t see this coming.
China was always willing to play the long game.
We’ll see if trump does the same.
His whole messaging for the Midwest was to go after China and try to bring some jobs/companies back. He abandons that and deals with China in 2020 he loses the message. We are about to see how big his balls are.
He will effectively hit Biden and Kamala hard though because neither will go after China.
Immigration and healthcare will still rule in 2020 but if trump can bring the nafta replacement, TPP, and China our to the forefront which he will definitely do, just how effective than he’s in good shape as far as messaging.

A question for Trump supporters - what do you honestly see as his play in this?

China is stupid.
I don't really know of ONE person that voted for Trump in 2016 that would change their vote for a Democrat Socialist in 2020.
Its highly likely that Trump gets the sames votes. Then you have all the people that have jump on the Trump train since he took office.

Trump is humiliating them and has them on the brink of disaster.
The mass panic as companies flee for the exits is draining the capital, jobs, and essential technological knowledge on which China has built its paper economy.
They have already lost one bank in this trade war, and the others are in grave danger.
They are sitting on the largest real estate bubble in human history at $65 Trillion in construction and domestic property holdings that cannot be sustained without liquidity. But, unfortunately, many Chinese are leveraged up to their assholes to pay for their overpriced homes and, in many cases, rental properties with no tenants (i.e. a money suck). Meanwhile, the banks are being forced to devalue the Yuan to fight Trump's tariffs, so the value of these real estate holdings is plummeting. This means there is a real possibility of a cascading wave of defaults as Chinese workers lose their jobs and the means to pay their mortgage which, in turn, would prompt a collapse of the Chinese housing market which represents 25% of the nation's GDP and 80% of its wealth.
Things tend to get rather...unpleasant after something like that happens.
They are getting BTFO from every direction.

Xi is hoping the voters won't be patient. Then it doesn't matter if Trump plays the long game.

And now they have a revolution brewing in Hong Kong that they are trying to put down with force.
Even going as far as to use organized crime as shock troops.

Trump can lose the election. Rulers in China can lose their heads. Can’t let the people get too upset.
Trump for the win.
Trump for the win.

Economic downturn has nothing to do with China. Global manufacturing recession and negative interest rates. The only safe market for foreign investors is US Bonds and the yield has tanked.

China may very well be willing to wait.
However,...
1. Even if the Dems win and give them a sweetheart deal, many companies will have already left and it is unclear if they would return.
2. If trump does win, the deal China gets after his reelection will be much worse for them than if they were to negotiate a deal now.
So China can play the long game, but the long game could prove a much worse outcome than if they deal now.
However given China's thought process, I have long said they may just wait and pray and push hard for a Dem to win in 2020.
