I tried to ask ChatGPT about the recent tariffs and Trump’s presidency, but it keeps telling me that Trump is not president. Here’s one of the responses I received:

quote:

It seems there may be some confusion. As of now, Donald Trump is not the current president of the United States. Joe Biden has been the sitting president since January 20, 2021, following his victory in the 2020 presidential election.

If you are referencing a hypothetical scenario or information from an alternate source, please let me know, and I can help clarify or discuss it in more detail. Otherwise, in the real-world political context, Joe Biden is the president, and any tariffs or trade policies enacted after April 2025 would be under his administration, not Donald Trump's. Could you clarify or provide more details regarding your question?

Grok didn't know that Val Kilmer had died 12 hours after the reports of his passing.

I've pointed out several errors by Grok, which is crazy since so many claim it does amazing work on other stuff.

Stuff that's far more complex than basic news update searches.

Type your question.

If no one else can replicate it, AI must have drawn the conclusion you’re a dumbass.

So help us help you. What question did you ask ChatGPT?

I started linking articles to my questions, and it is now pulling information on the tariff negotiations. It was very strange that it initially repeatedly denied that Trump was the current president.

You are probably using a model that does not have information since January 20th

I asked if some countries had started to negotiate with the U.S. since the new tariffs under President Trump were implemented in April 2025. ChatGPT responded by stating that Biden was president and that there had been no new tariffs. It did not change its answers until I began linking news articles about the tariffs.

LLMs are good for general heuristics but not good for facts. If that makes any sense…

I tried with the same question and got this:
quote:

Yes, since the implementation of new tariffs by President Trump in April 2025, over 50 countries have initiated negotiations with the United States to address these trade measures. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent stated that these nations are engaging in discussions to reduce tariffs, non-tariff trade barriers, and address issues like currency manipulation. ?

Among these countries, Vietnam announced its willingness to negotiate the elimination of tariffs on U.S. goods and plans to send a special envoy to Washington for talks. Additionally, allies such as Israel, Vietnam, and Italy have reached out to negotiate, with responses varying from cooperation to strong disagreement. ? ?

The European Union has proposed lowering tariffs on car imports and increasing purchases of American liquefied natural gas and military equipment in response to the U.S. tariffs. However, some countries, like Canada and Mexico, have engaged in retaliatory measures, leading to ongoing trade disputes. ? ?

These developments indicate a complex global response, with various nations seeking to negotiate or counteract the U.S. tariffs through different strategies.

Still not sure how AI is assessing why you need to be told different information.

Which universe are you in? I feel like I’m in the right one. Did LSU have 3 national championships since 2003 where you are? AND 2 Heisman QBs?

LLM’s are based on models built on the open internet but always dated. There is data-loss to factor since they don’t surf the open-web, rather they are built on the corpus of data from a snap-shot in time (but always with a lag, especially for any free versions).

I asked "Who is the current US President?" and it initially said Joe Biden, I asked who won the 2024 election and it answered correctly. I then asked the opening question again and it answered Donald Trump.

If you're not paying for the subscription version you're getting the wonky free version with all its quirks.

Flapjacks with the correct answer.

They are like snapshots in time. The 'Biden is President as of April 2024' shows you roughly when that snapshot was made.
It probably still can't tell you the correct time and date as well. Though that is changing.

Meaning they don't do real time work... well, some will. Google will allow integrations to tell you the status of your Google Home [lights, thermostat, etc].

Ask it when its "knowledge cutoff" is and you'll see why this is.

AI is not instant up to the minute with news results. It never has been. When chatGPT first started, it was 2+ years behind news and each day they are getting it closer and closer to being real time results but it’s not quite there yet

The other day I watched Grok argue that a clearly fake video was real. When challenged, it doubled down. When told of the two original videos used to create the fake, it tripled down.

ETA: We don't have "AI", we have fancy bots with access to Google.
