LAFAYETTE, Colo. -- A Boulder Valley School District teacher now faces child abuse and assault charges for allegedly forcing a child to stand for the Pledge of Allegiance earlier this month, CBS Denver reports. Lafayette police say Karen Smith, a physical education teacher at Angevine Middle School, grabbed a boy by his jacket, lifted him to his feet and took him out of class on February 1. Police were called.

The school district released a letter it sent to parents Tuesday saying, "Today we learned that the Boulder County District Attorney's office has formally charged Angevine Middle School Physical Education Teacher Karen Smith. Ms. Smith has served Boulder Valley School District for 20 years and is currently on paid administrative leave. We are cooperating with the District Attorney's Office and respect their decision on this matter. We are unable to comment further because it remains a personnel matter that the school district is actively investigating."

The school district allows students to stand or sit during the pledge, district spokesperson Randy Barber told the Denver Post.

A parent waiting to pick her child up at the school the day after the alleged incident told CBS Denver her daughter knows Smith as a "strict" teacher but has never had an issue with her.

Two other parents who spoke to CBS Denver off camera said they believe the story has been "blown out of proportion," and expressed disappointment.

What a waste of taxpayer money. A fricking waste. Just fire the woman, or suspend her. What is the point of charging her with assault and child abuse?

Lawsuit is silly, but why is this teacher so indifferent to the laws were she teaches?

My high school principal had a fondness for lifting you to you your feet by pulling you by your ear. She also used it in lieu of the paddle at times. I experienced it once and that was all I needed to keep me from doing what I had done ever again.

Kids are pussies and their parents are the cause.

My dad would have told me "Don't involve me with such trivial shite. You sort that out yourself....but, do NOT do anything that makes me fill out a form!"

I remember when teachers would whack your hand with a ruler for doing far less than that. Back then it was called "discipline", today it's called "abuse" and then people wail and lament about how kids are out-of-control.

shite, we had a name for the paddles our teachers used on us in school.

wtf has happened to this country? the very idea of a spanking taking place in a school right now would probably be an international scandal.

Teacher should not have done that.

But the other kids in school should have beat that commies arse that afternoon.

Bar of soap in a sock and swing away.

Mine would add "If you cause me to leave my job and answer for your actions I'm going to beat your arse".

That was his "go to"

Dad..I'm going out for the evening.

Have a good time...but do NOT do anything that makes me fill out a form!" (always meant, don't get arrested, don't go the hospital, don't damage other people's property, don't drive into a ditch, etc)

So long as my good time did not necessitate him filling out some kind of form...he was pretty "live and let live"

By whom?

IF IF this is as simple as a teacher lifting a kid by the jacket, and removing him/her/it from class, the Boulder County District Attorney should be disbarred.

When our teachers paddles broke, we made them new ones. And we'd sign them after they used them on us. It was a badge of honor.

For my parents it was, "Don't do anything to embarrass us." I think that was big with their generation. Don't cause embarrassment to the family.
