We are still in the infancy of the social media age which is rife with misinformation and bias able to influence the populous instantly and constantly. There has been almost no regulation, with the exception of Twitter/FB which has really just been censorship against political opponents. And to be able to compete with social media, the MSM has had to follow suit. Simply reporting the facts without spin or editorial is practically unheard of now. Regardless of political slant I believe a vast majority of Americans don't trust the media. They just pick sources that echo their views. This may be the single biggest threat to the republic. Even if we wake up to this fact and want to fix it, how does it get fixed? The only people with the power to change it are the ones benefitting from it now. I have no idea what the answer is, but I think it likely involves less human involvement. Maybe some sort of AI controls information dissemination. No idea, but something has to change.

I always though the internet would dismantle the media’s influence as free flow of information would rule over curated propaganda.

The social media came along, and now we just have a larger and more influential medium that is turning to curated propaganda

I don’t think so. When big corporations like Amazon purchase newspapers to use in political attacks to further their global agenda then I don’t see a way back.

Not under Constitutional Rule of Law. Moot issue though, a CROL is going south anyway. Dems have already abandoned it...all that is left is for the Right to respond in kind.

No. Half of the country thinks the media isn't broken, therefore it doesn't need a fix. What needs a fix is the political intellect of the American public and I can promise you as a 68 year-old political watcher, that isn't going to happen.

There is a 556 point plan out there on how to fix the media. Nah, I’m kidding, I believe in due process. Those who willfully were involved in the coup should be tried and hanged, and that may tighten up the rest of the weasels

A good fix, at least as far as social media is concerned, would be to remove the protections from liability afforded by Section 230(c).

I think it is unrepairable because the left wingers own the huge majority of the media outlets. The left want our country in disarray and turmoil....gives them lots of negative news to push. Unfortunately, this is here to stay for a long time.

It is amazing how Trump has survived the media trying to destroy him as our president! He is one tough SOB!

No. I think it’s dying though - which is a good thing. Most of the news I watch are snippets from YouTube of Tucker, LI, and The Five. I podcast Ben Shapiro, Joe Rogan experience, Chicks on the Right and Dan Bongino. Pretty much all news media I consume are cherry picked according to their guests, events, and fact gathering.

I do sample CNN/NBC from time to time to keep my enemies close. it’s also good to know what kind of garbage some of my relatives and co-workers are being spun.

Question is, why aren’t conservative billionaires doing the same thing?

The way back might be pretty bumpy. To do nothing is to surrender the present and the future to absolute media control (yes it can get worse). Fighting the future and media’s irresponsible dive into thought control will probably take total control of both houses of Congress, the White House, the Supreme Court. It will take a commitment to really prosecuting criminal behavior - no matter how big the entity or individual may be and maybe even draconian seeming steps to suspending certain rights, like freedom of the press until certain controls can be established and enforced, like a press code of ethics, with teeth and oversight. To do nothing but name the problem is to do nothing to fix it.

ETA: a better, more palatable approach is what Tigerhalen added in the post following mine... treating all big media and social media as monopolies and breaking them up,.

Big media must be broken up for a reason other than information bias: They are able to screw the cable/satellite consumer because so few companies own so many channels. I won’t get into the specifics, but if one wants to do the research, look at how many channels in your package are owned by Viacom (CBS), Time Warner/AT&T, Disney (ABC and Fox), and Comcast (NBC). Notice that two of them are also huge cable companies. How is that any different than the monopolistic companies of the late 19th century and early 20th century owning their supply chains?

Also, the the Time Warner/AT&T merger should not have been allowed, and the Disney purchase of Fox should not have been allowed.

Islam has a system that seems to tamp down on unwanted media stories.

Just ask Charlie Hebdo.

The ability to sue the media for careless or intentional false reporting is probably the best way. Lower the bar for winning against the media and require a front page/ lead story admission of guilt. That would force them to be more careful or be sued out of business.
