This is bigger than all that. This goes back to the Obama Admin trying to pivot to Iran and then Trump coming in and immediately pivoting back towards Saudi Arabia.
Former Obama Admin aides are constantly traveling the world and meeting with Iranians and other Europeans in an effort to get them to wait out Trump. The media and Deep State sense and opening here to cause a rift with Trump and the Saudis.

because we as a nation have been the worlds flag bearer for human rights, religious freedom, a free press, etc. it's why we got involved in serbian crisis, you see stories about boko haram abduction of girls, we sanction venezuela, etc. We're more internally focused now. I'm not saying that's wrong but just answering the op question. we're now questioning all those historial things, as a people. hence, the 'why would i give a shite about that' discussions?
