California utility companies propose charging customers based on how much money they make

If you earn more, you pay more.
That’s the basic idea behind sweeping changes proposed by California’s three largest power companies that will impact your electricity bill.
Southern California Edison, Pacific Gas & Electric, and San Diego Gas & Electric submitted a joint proposal to the state’s Public Utilities Commission last week that outlines the new rate structure. It follows last year’s passage of Assembly Bill 205 which requires a fixed rate and generally simpler power bills.
Under the proposal, households will see a fixed rate covering basic electricity services and the utility company’s operating costs on a scale based on their household income.
Households with annual income from $28,000 – $69,000 would pay $20 a month in Edison territory, $34 a month in SDG&E territory and $30 a month in PG&E territory.
Households earning from $69,000 – $180,000 would pay $51 a month in Edison and PG&E territories and $73 a month in SDG&E territory.
Those with incomes above $180,000 would pay $85 a month in Edison territory, $128 a month in SDG&E territory and $92 a month in PG&E territory.

Everytime I think California reaches the bottom, they go and outdo themselves again.

Or how bout you pay for what you use. I know this is in Commiefornia but come on that is ridiculous. This also gives poors zero incentive to not waste energy and keep up with their home to make them as energy efficient as possible. Then this is the beginning when the poors become accustomed they will raise the rate on the middle and upper middle class as the cost will rise. This is a terrible idea and you think rolling blackouts are a problem now? Give poors no incentive to conserve electricity and they will shut the power grid down.

Wait...the highest utility bill you can have is $92? There must be a usage fee applied to that as well.
As I often say...Do it California...Do it.
What could go wrong?

Overall, rates will decrease by about 33% per kilowatt hour for all residential customers, the utility says.

Not unless they're putting limits on usage. Don't think they are, but just putting this out there to give them some more bright ideas.

So the utility companies are going to have access to tax returns?

So the couple that makes 200K is going to pay the same extra fee as Spielberg and Tom Cruise

And just how will a utility company know someone's income?
I wish my electric bill was only $51 a month.

Some utilities already offer help with electric bills to low income residents. But in most cases it is a government agency handling the collection of information and the agency pays the bill to the utility.
What California passed was a bill that would put the utility in charge of collecting this information and adjusting the base rates on your stated income. I would imagine the utility would like to see an income statement either from Social Security, W-2, or your 1040 to qualify.
No what if you don’t want to participate, do they give you the highest rate by default?

This can’t be constitutional. Especially if these are government sanctioned monopolies with no competition.

The SCOTUS would wad that up, and throw in the toilet, 5 minutes after it hit their court docket!
