Estimates of the cost of the tax vary. The California Air Resources Board, the Golden State's premier anti-pollution agency, predicts the new tax will raise gasoline prices from 20 cents to $1.30 per gallon. A prominent state senator who helped author the bill estimated the cost at 40 cents a gallon. Environmental activists downplay the cost, but hail the impact.
"We're going to now tackle probably 40 percent of greenhouse gas emissions in the state that are emitted mostly through transportation - oil and gas use," said Climate Resolve Executive Director Jonathan Parfrey.
The cost of the climate change law never was spelled out in the original bill in 2010, which did not even include transportation fuels. But any meaningful climate change law would have to address driving, the state's largest single source of pollution. By raising the price, officials hope to reduce the number of miles driven as consumers are forced to consider options.

So by taxing it more, they solve the problem. Sounds about right.

No they won't. They'll just bend over a little further and smile and say "sock it to me".

As long as the tax is on everyone I don't see this as a big deal. State rights, don't subsidize the poor, don't like it? Move.
That being said, I will never live in CA.

It will be Bush's fault.

Idiotic. Obviously the tax is meant to put a burden on driving your automobile, but until every city is connected efficiently via public transport, all this does is hurt people with cars who need them for travel.
Perhaps states should try to further incentivize innovation in clean fuels and transport that doesn't harm the environment rather than hurt people with few options who are just trying to live their lives.

Yes. Forget about freedom, force the middle class to consider the impact their existence has on this planet by taxing the frick out of them.
This is just sickening.
People vote for this shite.

I hate California, and yes they will complain, I am in this place everyday and most people here are clueless, they will all say:
"why is gas so expensive now?"
"why is gas so expensive now?"

The logic:
Californians want to drive less...but not enough to actually drive less on their own...instead they must tax themselves which will force less driving.
This is manipulation at its finest.

They will.
As in trucking companies leaving and other business that can make more profit elsewhere.
Lean forward Cali!

i had a coworker that just recently moved out there to take up a gay lover.
he literally left after 3 weeks after seeing his taxes and how wacked out people were out there.
just said "never mind." and moved back overnight.

It's all by design
These same legislators and politicians who passed this gas tax increase are the same ones who will be running campaign ads against "The Evil Big Oil Industry" in a few months blaming them for the higher gas prices
Too bad most voters are morons who don't see right through it and will fall for it
