California Dem wants reparations checks tax-free before anyone even knows who’s getting paid

California’s political class may not have figured out exactly how reparations would work, who would qualify, or how much taxpayers could be on the hook for — but some lawmakers are already working on making sure any future payouts stay out of the tax collector’s reach.

In a move that is sure to reignite one of the state’s most divisive debates, Democratic Assemblymember Tina McKinnor has advanced legislation that would exempt future reparations payments from California state income taxes if such programs are ever approved.

The proposal, Assembly Bill 2186, has now landed in the California Senate after clearing the Assembly. If it survives there, it will head to Gov. Gavin Newsom’s desk.

McKinnor framed the bill as a matter of fairness, arguing that recipients should receive every dollar of any future reparations package. “For generations, descendants of formerly enslaved people have been denied both justice and economic opportunity,” McKinnor said. “Reparations are meant to repair harm, not be partially taken back through taxation.”

Most of the states/cities having these reparations discussions never had slaves. It's performative.

No substantial reparations payments will ever be made. They know it. We know it. Everyone knows it. It's strictly an act. Then they can say they tried, but ..... reasons.

Not sure of any specific dates but a lot of "slave - type " work was done by the 1000's of Chinese immigrants.

Well, I had 114 ancestors who died in the Civil War fighting to end slavery. That makes' me entitled to a reparations check for each one from EVERY state that pays out reparations due to this terrible happening 250 years ago.

Damn, I'm gonna be a trillionaire!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

They can't even tell you their daddy's name. How the hell are they going to be able to prove that they are descendants of slaves?

I wish Cali would hurry up and give us the figure that the fedgov is overpaying them that they have money to do this.

1 - I think Trump needs to repeat what Gavin said and that if anyone receives reparations checks the federal government will tax them 100%.
2 - if I was of asian/Chinese decent I would be suing CA like crazy over this as CA had 0 slaves of African decent but they sure as hell kept Asians as slaves.
