California City Is First in U.S. to Give Away Free Cash to Fight Income Inequality

This town in California’s Central Valley has long functioned as a display case for wrenching troubles afflicting American life: The housing bust that turned Stockton into an epicenter of a national foreclosure disaster and plunged the city into bankruptcy. The homeless people clustered in tents along the railroad tracks. Boarded-up storefronts on cracked sidewalks. Gang violence.
Now, Stockton hopes to make itself an exhibition ground for elevated fortunes through a simple yet unorthodox experiment. It is readying plans to deliver $500 a month in donated cash to perhaps 100 local families, no strings attached. The trial could start as soon as the fall and continue for about two years.
As the first American city to test so-called universal basic income, Stockton will watch what happens next. So will governments and social scientists around the world as they explore how to share the bounty of capitalism more broadly at a time of rising economic inequality.

How is 100 families universal? There's 300,000 people in Stockton. Sounds like plain old welfare to me.

It always amazes me that people for some reason think the natural state of things is for income to be “equally distributed”. That is not how society has traditionally worked. You are paid for your productivity and how much you contribute to the aggregate economy. There is no reason to think that the urge and drive and incentive to be productive in an economy is equally distributed among the population. Some people are more productive than others and that causes inequality
We don’t have a distribution problem, we have a productivity problem. Our poor actually work SIGNIFICANTLY LESS than our rich

Ever seen The Road Warrior?
That's the Central Valley.
It's a wasteland. No water, no gas...no dice.

It's almost like there is a blueprint for how not to be poor in this country.

And the mass exodus of California’s tax paying citizens continues to grow.

This only proves what I've been saying for years. The left cares nothing about equal opportunity.
Equal results is what they want.

Who the hell writes this crap?

and the left would completely ban the discussion Bell curves if they could
party of science my arse
Everything involving social/econ populations of people is on normal distributions

Plus, the myriad of bad decisions that a particular individual made to get to his present state is never a factor.

I’d love to be a meth dealer in Stockton right about now...

You always post stories. Make no comment. And never return to the thread. It's a very strange posting style.

Why do you hate the poor? Don’t ask them to work. Give them stuff. Filthy capitalist pig.

The daily bench McElroy pro liberal thread where doesn’t leave any commentary.

i mean lets be honest-it doesn't matter if it's cash or food stamps it all comes off the backs of taxpayers and it should be frickin illegal. this country has a serious, serious case of "woe is me" and i'm afraid it will just keep getting worse.

So you’re saying if I get an education, work full time, and stay married my chances of being poor are minuscule?
[sarcasm] Why do they make it so hard to be successful? [/sarcasm]
