I'm going to make a crazy suggestion here. Maybe. Just maybe, it would help reduce the number of students who think shooting all their friends because they were made to feel bad........

if..........

please stay with me here............

we go back to recognizing that WORDS aren't "bullying" and properly marginalize the very idea that they are. From a very early age. Ya know. Let's abandon this idea that we should teach people that any and all sleights against them should be met with an authoritarian swat rather than.......oh, I dunno.......a simple, "meh, your words don't matter to me" response.

I realize that in 2018, this seems like a crazy idea........but you might be stunned to learn that when I was a kid........if we went home saying, "Mommy, Johnny called me a mean name"...........Mommy didn't run to the school to get Johnny suspended. Mommy taught you that Johnny wasn't worth your time. She did that when you were like 5........so by the time you were 16, people calling you names was something you could laugh at.

ETA: Apparently, a bunch of dummies in here don't comprehend that physical bullying is still bullying......but that isn't what's driving the whole "bullying epidemic". THAT is a "mean words" issue.

......you don't know what you're talking about. Please do your research before you make ridiculous statements like that.

A lot of sjw students bully the hell out of those that aren't sjws. In several schools.

With social media and the internet, people can gang up and relentlessly berate another person all day and night.

You can say that we should be able to handle words, but we know that they can hurt, especially given the way people can coordinate the insults as the person is isolated.

It's just ridiculous to suggest otherwise.

So sticks and stones will never hurt me but words can break bones?

Dude. I didn't fall out of the sky 51 years old.

What's ridiculous is creating a social paradigm that values sheltering self esteem to the point that you actually frick up self esteem and develop adults incapable of handling even the smallest sleights

Anti bullying campaigns stem from, in large part, columbine and humanized the mitherfucjers and made them relatable to more kids than we want to admit

Yeah we should just lie to everyone and pretend like all those kids are just evil monsters. Don't want those kids with easy access to weapons to feel like they can relate.

We certainly don't want them relating with the killers!

If you give them attention. It's pretty easy to ignore and/or block.

this may be true, but to say in your title that bullying, 'by and large, doesn't exist', is at the least willfully ignorant, if not outright stupid ... bullying does exist, by people, the majority of whom are boys, that derive pleasure from intimidating other kids in a variety of ways ... it does exist and is significant, to some degree, daily in many kids' lives ... yes, some of it should be responded to with a shrug or a witty, sarcastic remark, but to say it does not exist is false ...

I would also point out that social media is an outlet that kids 40 years ago didn't have.

If everyone in you school decided you were fun to pick on with words 40 years ago, you literally had nowhere to turn. You might have no one else your age you could even interact with.

So, this idea that it's somehow worse now is just claptrap.

What's worse is that we stopped even TRYING to teach kids to handle it.

I disagree. I think they should understand the mind of the killers much more in-depth. You can't shelter people from things people need to learn how things work and how to a better address situations like these before they happen.

But I’m not talking about the smallest of sleights. I'm taking about groups of people attacking a person in person and online all day long.

I mean just look how many times posters who act all tough on here like cptbengal and KCT will run to the help board abd complain about some insults from anonymous people on a message board that serves as the only connection to one another.

Yet. If the tough guys can't handle that, then how do you expect teenagers to handle things exponentially worse?

Sorry won't let you off that easy. How about facts? Contrary to your assertion bullying is a problem....and a significant one. Although it does appear we've making progress. Anyway, I lifted some statistics from the National Center for Education Statistics: Bullying rates at school. Here goes.....

Bullying % Rates by Gender by year (12 - 18 age group)

Yr. Gender %

2007 Female 34
Male 31

2009 Female 29
Male 26

2011 Female 32
Male 25

Attention to the problem resulted in school districts doing a better job of identifying and curtailing bullying. We did see a significant drop in 2013

2013* Female 24
Male 19

2016* Female 23
Male 19

*National Bullying Prevention Center Stats.

As you can see we've made progress, but the incidences of bullying is still too high. I was surprised to learn girls are subjected to bullying more than boys.

Facts are stubborn things - John Adams

As you were.
