He has always been left. This song is not the patriotic anthem that people think. It’s about a war veteran that comes home and thinks he should be getting more out of or from his country than is being provided. Nothing wrong with that as a general song theme, but it’s never been the flag waving anthem that folks believed to it to be.

I used to love his music when I was in high school, and had all of his albums through "The River" and saw him twice in concert. I can't even listen to him these days.
