Israel doesn’t have defensible borders, and they face enemies who pose a genuinely existential threat to them. And there’s always a high risk of conflict.
Part of their security strategy, to deal with this, is projecting this hyper militant image. And projecting an aura of supreme competence. They want deter attacks if at all possible.
They are in a perpetually bad situation though and it makes them very insecure. Their original plan included annexing Jordan, at least the western half, which would have given them much better strategic depth.

We’ve spent around 3.75 trillion on foreign aid since the end of WW2. But the Iraq War cost us around 2 trillion. And that was a war we fought for Israel.
