I would like to think that pepper spray wouldn't do anything to me as I would be killing those frickers taking my kid.

But the second is definitely one key check, its not the police that are at risk if the elections are abolished, its the politicians who abolish the elections that now need to worry about being shot.
We are far from there, but there was a reason we arm every population we want to overthrow its government.

yea Police and Military are "Patriotic" but they listen to Orders given down from the same government we are hypothetically saying is taking away rights. So its a good assumption that you would be fighting a Gestapo like force.
