Regardless of whether Trump is actually a racist or whether many in his voting base are racist or even whether it's logical for minorities to be triggered by Trump's campaign slogan, the last few weeks with the events in Boston and especially Cville have created an environment in which overt Trump support is associated with divisive ideas for people who feel marginalized.
Doesn't matter if it's right, it's the case. To do this in such an environment either implies an immaturity that prevented the girls from being aware of that reality or if they were aware, it implies a desire to instigate divisive feelings.
I believe they were in the wrong to do so, even I agree it's not categorically wrong to be a Trump supporter. They were well within their right to advertise their support for the president, but I don't believe their decision to do it in this case was made with pure intentions.
As I said before, I also think the students could have also handled it in such a way as to not magnify the problem. Everyone needs to behave with more sensitivity and with a desire to coexist as a national community of people who can disagree respectfully.
