Iran didn’t have the intelligence to track US troops that effectively. Russia or China helped them do that.
It would have been dumb as hell to have brought our aircraft carriers into the gulf in the first place. Iran has the capabilities to not only shoot at those ships but could drive a smaller boat up to the side of one packed with explosives and then detonate. Something similar to the USS Cole attack. The choke point at the Strait of Hormuz could have been bad news for ships as big as an aircraft carrier if it was being swarmed with anti-ship missiles, small boats packed with explosives, drones, and I think they even had a small sub or two. It would have been risking a ship when the Navy really didn’t need too.
