Bill would require minimum wage for MD inmates, who make as little as 17 cents hourly

Let's file this under 'hell, no!' Minimum wage for making license plates? They get room and board courtesy of the tax payers. They're criminals, not paid workers.
Maryland inmates make as little as $0.17 per hour for voluntary prison employment and training, a stipend that one lawmaker compared to “slave labor” in support of legislation that would require the state to pay more.
Del. Dr. Terri Hill, a Demorat representing Baltimore and Howard counties, wants to raise the stipend for all inmate work volunteers to as close to minimum wage as possible, helping them save money while incarcerated and equipping them to re-enter society without having to rely on their families, or further criminal activity that could again land them behind bars, for financial support.
A similar bill received an unfavorable report by the House Economic Matters Committee in 2019.

I say we keep paying them 17 cents hourly and re-task them to picking up homeless poop in San Francisco.

If you can make $17 an hour and have every other expense paid for by the government, it would overturn the well known saying,” crime doesn’t pay!”
A person could stack away all the money and walk away in good shape after a jail term.

The inflation in a carton of Luckies will be insane.

I'm actually down for that. With no more slave wages, officials and the system itself may stop going balls to the wall on keeping inmates locked up as long as possible.
With regard to the violent lifers, they will still be imprisoned for life.. but they'll have decent money to send to their family members. In which case, some family members may be able to get off of the government tit.

If you think the prison wages are too low then maybe don’t go to prison?

Give them that then start taking out taxes plus costs of room and board in the prison.
At best they may bet a small gain.

frick it - if they're putting in a competitive hour of work (not just standing there) and they have oversight and outsiders there to verify they ARE working equivalent to a job that any Joe or Jane Q. Public is doing in the real world? Fine - pay them minimum wage.
BUT, just make sure we deduct their meals, medical care, and at least a little bit for their phone, electricity, water, etc. Otherwise, that would be a big load of horseshite for the taxpayers to eat, wouldn't it?

sure, pay them minimum wage, then deduct the cost of room, board, and security. They have to pay taxes on that minimum wage too. Probably end up owing the state way more than what they make.

That's 17 cents too much.

I 100% support this. Exploitive prison labor is a civil rights issue.
End the police state.
