Bill to end lawless seizure of Americans property

Bipartisan legislation could halt the federal government’s decades-long practice of seizing billions of dollars from Americans who never face criminal charges.
"The lawless seizure and ‘forfeiture’ of people’s private property by police officers is becoming standard operating procedure in many parts of the country," Rep. Jamie Raskin, a Democrat who co-sponsored the bill, said in a statement. "We want to restore the presumption of innocence, fair judicial process, and the opportunity to be heard."
Raskin and Republican Rep. Tim Walberg reintroduced a bill on March 9 that would overhaul federal civil asset forfeiture laws, which allow the government to seize and sometimes keep property from citizens who, in many instances, have never been charged with a crime. If passed, the legislation would force agencies to make a case for seizure to a judge, remove financial incentives around forfeiture and raise the level of proof needed to allow for seizures.

Raskin…presumption of innocence
Except if it’s Trump or his team

There definitely needs to be more protections against civil asset forfeiture.

This is only being floated because the DNC knows it might lose in 2024, and if so, a new administration could rightfully go after a lot of people tied to the DNC that have been engaged in a lot of shenanigans. Dems do nothing unless it's for self-preservation or accumulation of more power.

If Raskin loved his own son as much as he hated Trump he might still be alive.

civil asset forfeiture.
Not nitpicking, but this term is too smooth and needs to be rebranded as government theft of property. There's no "forfeiting" possible, because that implies that someone grants the loss due to failure on their part. Theft is theft.

This is a step in the right direction. It needs to completely end. Prove the money/property was/is being used in court, after a guilty verdict.

The lesson to learn from this history is to be ever vigilant of our government when the impending pendulum swing back against our current crime wave occurs. Do NOT let another CAF or ramp up of militarism in the policing occur again, just like illegal alien amnesty should not occur again, no matter what.

It also needs to expedite CAF cases against police agencies as well as encompass recompense for agency abuses. Just saying "don't do that" isn't enough for something like this, there also needs to be an "or else, this" component to give it real teeth.

Anything less than that is simply grand larceny by government.

Agreed. Law enforcement has been way too bold in this regard and should be knocked down a few pegs.

This would make a good duo of laws if we reintroduce the ban on ESG as in the bill Pedo Joe stepped out of the shower with his daughter long enough to veto last week
Bring it back
BAN ESG NOW

So the authorities arrive at your door because your neighbor doesn't like you and they find some reason to search your property for "contraband" and in so doing they find that you have your passport and several thousand dollars of "contingency" money locked in your gun safe.
On the assumption that you are a criminals and are preparing to flee the country, they confiscate the safe and all contents as well as anything else that they deem to be salable to fund their retirement funds.

It's a shite bill, as long as you have to pay property taxes, you never own your property.

This will put some Sherriff Offices into budget crunches.
