Disbanding the electoral college would be the end of a “United States”. What reason would a presidential candidate have to campaign in any state outside of the ones with the largest populations at that point?

That's not true. The states that get all the attention are a small number swing states. Other states, that are not in play, are ignored and taken for grated by one side or the other.

In the end, it's not going to matter whether this bill passes or not. The electoral college is on the way out.

12 states with 165 electoral votes have passed laws that require those states' electoral votes go to the winner of the national vote (Arizona recently passed it). And those 12 states which have passed it don't YET include California, Oregon or Washington.

It's just a matter of time. And the incentive to other states will be to pass laws before 2020.

That's not even remotely true.

For the sake of argument, in a popular vote scenario doesn't someone living in Wyoming have the same power as someone living in NYC? A vote is a vote.

No we don't. As long as you keep bringing illegals in and letting them vote.

The electoral College is the last wall to NY and California ruling this country.

A country is not made up of two States nor should it be.

If we were one nation and not a collection of 50 sovereign states.

not in the same sense that Japan is a nation, or France is a nation, etc. SCOTUS has ruled the the states are sovereign and have a shared sovereignty with the United States.

We are built different.

Okay but you're changing the subject. Is it because you have no idea what you're talking about?

On the surface it would appear that way.. However I would argue politics are cyclical and life has a way of correcting stupid...

It will catch up with them in the end at some point...

Democracy is just a civilized way of describing mob rule. That why the founders made us a representative republic.

Under our current system, the only states that merit campaigns in Presidential elections are states like, Nevada, Colorado, Iowa, Wisconsin, Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New Hampshire, NCarolina, and Florida. We might be adding states like Arizona and Georgia to that list...maybe. The candidates don't give a crap about the rest of us because we are too predictably Republican or Democratic.

No EC would mean that every vote in every state would count the same. PEOPLE are what should count and not just land areas arbitrarily drawn in many cases. The Constitution starts with We, the PEOPLE and not We, the STATES.

When states started electing their Electors popularly in the period 1816-40, Congress should have just abolished the EC then by Amendment.

Polls consistently show the majority of Americans prefer a direct popular election of the president.

That’s exactly what they get, in every state in the nation, with a couple of exceptions. Then electors from each state cast their votes for the winner of that direct popular election.

It’s the simplest, most straightforward way to prevent the population centers from tyrannically ruling the more rural population.

Be careful what you wish for, because what you’re really wishing for here is blood. Rivers of it.
