Does he have a point?

Bill Maher is coming under fire for comments he made about Bella Thorne’s mental health. This week Maher sat down with the Paradise City actress on his new podcast series Club Random, in which they discussed Thorne’s new cannabis brand Forbidden Flowers. Thorne shared that her inspiration behind creating the line came from how cannabis use helped her with her severe stomach issues and “crippling anxiety.” The comment struck a nerve with Maher, who questioned what youth of today, who are currently living through a pandemic, have to be anxious about. He then questioned how informed Gen Z was about today’s issues. “I find this to be a disingenuous argument because your generation doesn’t know what’s going on in the world,” he said. “So how can you be that f***ing concerned about what’s going on in the world? I know what’s going on in the world, I should have the anxiety. I follow it. You kids don’t follow it. You don’t know what the f*** is going on in the world. What are you upset about?” After Thorne pushed back, sharing that there's a lot of "bad" in the world that this generation is witnessing both in the news and on social media, Maher added, "I think a lot of the people who are the most anxious have the most privileged lives. Look at your life! Everybody wants it.” Later on, Maher suggested that the younger generation was so focused on their own mental health they couldn't be informed about the real problems of the world. Thorne called his viewpoint a "narrow" one. Maher walked back his comments, but said that spending "everyday with a therapist" could be an "indulgence," pointing out that not everyone can afford that.

Interesting the admission that Covid (and, implicitly, the lockdowns and isolation) has resulted in mental health issues.

What's happened to this world when Bill Maher is starting to sound like a reasonable person?

I think social media is the main problem, but COVID sent everything into overdrive. Trump was perfect for these people because they could blame him for all of the world's problems. They don't know where to direct that anger and anxiety now.

I had crippling anxiety for years

However it was induced by alcoholism. A habit I developed over years and years of abuse. Nothing in particular bad happened in my childhood, I just partied in high school and college and then it really did become a serious problem and anxiety and depression followed.

It took my life getting wrecked and nearly dying for me to get the message, and I’ll say that deep down I always knew the truth but was selfish. I think most of these modern day problems are somewhere along these lines. Being miserable is a choice. I no longer struggle with any of these things

I don’t think any of us comprehend the true harm social media is having on our society

Social media is a disease. Generations of children have and are growing up basically maintaining shrines of themselves. It's a narcissistic fantasy-world that can have schizophrenic results as they get older. And the more reality creeps in, the more they'll turn to medicating themselves and that crap eats holes in your brain eventually. All this in a culture they've helped create that lacks the ability to laugh...it's not an optimistic outlook.

To be fair, Maher has been saying this since day 1.

Check out his short segment with David Katz.

Social media is a massive problem. However imo it has just created a cycle that compounds issues which are all shallow, and mental health awareness mostly will not help these problems, and potentially will make things worse with additional coddling.

Our societal issues are mental and spiritual weakness

There is an explosion of mental illness, trendy anxiety, whatever you want to call it.

When I hear stories from my younger sisters describing their friends and coworkers I am astonished at what barely functioning wrecks they are. They all smoke weed, usually lots of it. They can’t get through the day without it. They decide not to travel because they worry about not having weed. They need animals for emotional support. Animals have been substituted for real personal relationships with friends and family.

They sleep under weighted blankets for emotional security. They struggle in social situations in which they can’t completely control. They have broken relationships with family. A lot of them don’t know what gender they are, don’t know what their sexuality is, etc.

They are often angry. They are extremely judgmental. They are on antidepressants, lots of them. They don’t cook. They pay people to bring them warmed over food all the time. They don’t go out to dinner with friends or family.

They don’t go to church. Most don’t believe in God or a higher power; it’s all about them, their issues, and the planet. Most are in therapy. Most have never had an intimate relationship of a substantial length of time.

And these are educated people. Most have masters or doctoral degrees. They are teachers, media professionals, nonprofit employees, etc. And it seems like this outbreak is mostly in ages 30s and below.

Who here remembers "duck and cover" drills in school?

What would today's kids think of the atomic bomb blast radius explainer cartoons we watched in 2nd grade?

We had a pandemic growing up too, called AIDS - bubonic plague deadly, unlike the Wuhan Flu.

Difference being people who had nervous breakdowns back then worried the men in white coats were gonna come get them.

Today, people who have nervous breakdowns expect to get told how awesome they are.

Very good post and on point. Most of us, not all, pretty much know when we are or choose to do something that is wrong or will result in bad things for us.

He calls out the ridiculous bullshite when he sees it. He is still full of TDS and is quite very liberal (by old standards, maybe a moderate in 2022)

Victimhood is celebrity now. And if your dad didn’t disappear when your were 5 or your mom didn’t die when you were 8 or you weren’t teased when you were in 6th grade because you were fat as frick, anxiety is the reliable go to affliction that provides victimhood cred.

He’s always been reasonable. You (I) may have not agreed with his position, but it wasn’t logically flawed. A lot of these people today are logically flawed. That was never Bill.

It really is that simple. Even when it’s not (a victim of childhood abuse), the answer is still the same. You cannot go through life holding on to things or it will consume you. And I don’t mean just talking about it to a therapist, I mean truly letting it go and moving on.

Personal idolatry and pursuit of what we view to be successful without any sort of grounding into more meaningful things to go along with it will never produce happiness. I was extremely successful as a mechanical engineer and never had a shred of joy because I refused to invest myself into meaningful things, and by that I mean helping others.

Dumb-arse progressives like Maher have made a career out of creating anxieties to their followers. He chastises Thorne for what he's done.

Wow. Great insight and even more impressive that you have the courage to admit it and profess it!

I’d love to hear more details about:

I’m fascinated by the interplay between our consciousness, or outward facing actions and behaviors, and our unconscious motivations.

In my case? Overinflated reliance on my own intelligence and an idea that I was smart enough to figure out everything on my own, live exactly how I wanted to live, have no regard for others unless it suited my interests, and as long as I worked hard enough and was not a burden on society I was bulletproof from scrutiny.

That type of mindset creates massive inertial forces against you, and a lot of us are stubborn enough to fight them to the death. Anxiety and depression are very real things don’t get me wrong, and they are terrible. However I believe them to be symptoms of other issues we have too much pride to address because we are a society of narcissists.
