Does his campaign really think this is a winning strategy????
I mean they must think that he is going to show up to the debate and actually obliterate Trump....that's the only thing that they could see and keep doing this.

Everything is about the debates. He has nothing to lose in them.
Everyone expects him to be a drooling zombie. If he isn't, he wins the debates, no matter what he says (per the media).
They will keep him completely out of things until debates to rest and prepare and drug him up, because its the only thing most people will see.
