So out of all the qualified people in the entire United States this is who they want to be President? What’s with all the speeches where he claims he can beat someone up? Is that a quality needed for president?

Now where were we? Oh yeah: the important thing was I had an onion on my belt, which was the style at the time. They didn't have white onions because of the war. The only thing you could get was those big yellow ones...

I didn't understand that story at all?!?!
Is he saying that he kicked a black dude out of the pool for not wearing a shower cap over his greasy hair as per the rules of the pool and then when the black guy wanted to kill him with a razor blade, he was ready to fight the guy with a chain but decided to diffuse the situation by apologizing to the guy for the inherent racism/cultural bias of kicking someone out of a pool for having a greasy substance in their hair. and then the guy with the razor blade was like...some version of... "respeck, man" and then walked away?
anyway, that's how I took the story. am I missing something?

The only part you missed was Joe apologizing for calling him 'Esther'. Esther Williams was an Olympic swimmer who went into really crappy movies back in the day.
