Apparently he could swim well.. but I've also heard that off certain coasts of that area, it's very brutal to swim in, under certain conditions. The waves will pull you under.
Admittedly, before this situation, I've never heard of that place, don't know shite about it, and have only relied on alleged experts from that area making comments to form any kind of opinions. And my opinions will automatically change if it turns out the "experts" are full of shite.

I'll tell you these barrier islands have cuts around them we call passes. It creates all kinds of currents and is usually much deeper than the middle portions where they park boats. It's basicallya pinch point or funnel where the water moves through. Very similar to grand isle down in Louisiana. There are drownings just about every summer and as in this case they are usually all in the same area.

True story - I actually met Ben Crump in Tallahassee over a decade ago before he became the “Ben Crump” we all know now. He had a billboard style ad in the airport terminal with his face on it. I was waiting to get my bag from claims and looked next to me and there he was. I asked if that was him on the ad. He said yes (he was wearing the same suit even). We chatted. Nice guy.

They are in too deep for sure. Maybe this all started out as some serious concern of potential foul play, or perhaps distrust for local authorities, but its morphed into a circus.
