There are pilots who could be flying the same (although revamped) airplane that their grandfathers flew...pretty neat to think about.

Well if it's a 35 hour round trip mission then the bombs should be hitting in a few hours once it's night time in Syria/Iraq!

Wow. I had no idea that this thread went on after my bed time. Yeah, the B-52s were supposed to last only a few years. There were several prototypes made to replace them. But they were scrapped because they weren't as good.

Zach do you remember the SR71's flying over New Iberia on their way to Cuba during the missile crisis? Once you heard the boom it was too late.

No. I was busy trying to convince my mom that stocking the closet with water and canned food for the coming nuclear war was useless.

There was a Navy Air Base in New Iberia back then but it was closed down and turned into a research center that experimented on apes. Became a big issue regarding animal rights. I saw it first hand. The apes were not treated well at all.

Question for you B-52 types on this board: Is the B-52 the most appropriate platform to hit Syria and/or Iraq?

For whatever reason, I see this conflict being more conducive to the AC-130 Spectre gunships, A-10s, B1s, and other fighters. Again, I don't know, but aren't B-52s better for fixed targets vs. mobile columns?

I take it they will be dropping guided bombs or some type of cruise missiles?

I believe they had a rust problem with their tin roofs.

B-52s remind us all that it is better to give than receive.

My dad flew bombers in WW2, Korea, and early Viet Nam. When I was a little kid in the 60's he would fly from Barksdale to Korea or the Phillipines OR to North Africa often. They can go that far, the B-52's can be refueled in the air also. We were from Bastrop.La and in the AF Reserves and flying out of Barksdale was routine then. I think these are going to Iraq. The planes do fly in a straight line, but from point to point. They could fly north to a point and then turn to cross the Atlantic in a flight plan.
