You're not taking into account reduction in turnover, thus leading to on boarding and training costs.

I'd bet fast-food turnover is 100% annually. In retail, it costs about 2500-3000 to hire and onboard a new employee. I'd imagine, fast food is slightly south of that, but still.

Who has ever asserted the automation saves the customer money?

This is the dumbest thing I’ve ever read on TD.
This has to be a bit. Nobody can actually be this stupid.

Wow. You're fighting back after starting this very dumb thread.

I said saving money

It's saving me money by the restaurant not having to go up in prices to offset paying folks worth $7.50 or $8 an hour up to $15 in some places. The choice is either add $1.50 or $2 to a lot of menu items, cut staff or put kiosks in. You make it seem like labor costs don't influence the price of goods.

They do.

quote:

How much money is your time worth, more than the kid who used to check you out at McDs?

Let's take the Wal-Mart example. Using their version of the "automated kiosks" (self-checkout), I'm always out faster than waiting in line.

quote:

They just transferred the cost to you, and the cost is your time.

No. They just avoided a cost increase they would have had to pass onto me.

Saves the fast food place money, which is the point. Just like self checkout. Instead of one cashier per register you have one cashier for 4-6 registers. Meanwhile you're doing the store's job for free and not even getting a discount.

If the only thing available is self checkout I walk out the door, I no longer go to Home Depot and McDonalds because of this. I know others that do the same, time will tell if money saved is greater than that of lost sales.

Why would you prefer to have some cashier fumble around with your stuff? I prefer self-checkout. It's great to go to Home Depot, scan a few things and be out quick. Why would you want to wait in line?

Three pages and no mention of buggy whip makers or troglodytes.

Something is wrong here.

Let's say right now they have 2 counter workers at a time making $10 an hour each. You fire them both and hire one kiosk tech at $18 an hour and you've just created a middle class skilled labor job and saved $2 per hour.

Next.

Thats the argument, you can cut headcount and save money, thats not true.

Who now operates that kiosk....how much do you make, probably more than minimum wage.

Or look at it another way, how much free time do you have in a day, and what do you do, you volunteer, free, to become a gas station attendant, bank teller, customer service rep.

Heck sometimes you dont even do it for free, some times you have to pay to do the job. Amazon has you pick out the item take it to the cashier, check yourself out, and then charge you to get it to your house...you dont actually think its free delivery, there is no money for nothing and the chicks for free (particularly the latter).

I know an elderly couple that went through the self check out @ Lowes grocery store. They became frustrated and inadvertently walked out not paying a lot of dough. They got mad and just bagged their stuff and only half was paid for.

I agree with the sentiment. it also doesn't save time either. invariably, I'm stuck behind a glue sniffer who is completely confused on how the machine works, and takes 3 times as long as the old lady at the counter counting out her loose change for a buttered biscuit and a senior coffee.

also, if there's any alterations to your food, i.e. "no pickle", it's got a 50/50 chance of being wrong because the same person expediting your meal is the same person too stupid to train on the register. other day, I got a completely different meal in the bag even though the person filling the bag and calling out my number were one and the same.
