Big Tech Backflip: Facebook Drops Australian News Ban, Bows to Government Regulation

In an extraordinary backflip, Facebook announced Tuesday it will reverse its block on Australian users sharing news on its site and accept proposed government media bargaining laws that force it to pay for content.

The capitulation came after Prime Minister Scott Morrison called Facebook “arrogant,” warning against “Big Tech companies who think they are bigger than governments and that the rules should not apply to them.

Yep, imagine elected officials doing things to benefit their citizens. Up until January we had Trump and pretty much nobody else. Now we have zilch

Why is the Australian government inserting itself into a two-party business transaction which one-party wanted no part of? Why are conservatives applauding this?

This is different from anti-trust or Section 230 discussions.

Can’t speak for others but I don’t care what Australia does (it’s like California) and I hate Facebook with a burning passion so I don’t care if they’re getting fricked, or if it’s unfair, or if Australia is overstepping.

Because frick Facebook, that’s why.

Don’t really care about anything else.

Well first of all it’s is Australia and laws are not the same there as here . Is it inserting itself as you claim between to entities with one party wishing it wanted no part of ? It is assessed that Facebook screws the news agencies to the tune of 5 billion by illegal republishing news feeds stories .

If Facebook doesn’t like it they can leave Australia.

Build their own country.

This is exactly what they threatened to do.

Then every other country in the world backed Australia and took the governments‘ side.

Basically, the world’s governments told Facebook you can expect more of this no matter where you are, we will control you, which WILL result in more censorship of dissenting voices.

When you find yourself on the same side as liberals and left-wing governments, you better take a real close look at why.

New Zealand is where it’s at. 10 years of I can keep this pace that’s where we are headed. Not easy place to gain citizenship, which is why it’s so great.

China’s laws are not the same as here either.

The media companies don’t benefit from showing up on Facebooks feed? Seems like a pretty mutually beneficial setup. At the very least it’s one in which the two parties can work out themselves.

Along comes the government’s heavy hand.

I understand if you’re not a conservative applauding this, but there will be reverberations here.

Missed Facebook saying they were leaving Australia and rest of world’s governments saying they would do the same as Australia.

What I saw was Facebook blocking sharing of news stories.

Oh no.

I hope the government doesn’t begin to overstep its bounds and hurt Big Tech.

Big Tech owns the American government. Nothing will happen that Big Tech doesn’t tacitly approve of or reach an understanding of with the US government.

Not so fast my friend. They are the country that confiscated all the guns and instantly made gun owners felons over night. Now they have people killing each other in brutal knife attacks.

If it wasn’t for that, Australia would be the perfect country in many ways.
