We were still trying to make nice with the Russians at the time, so we took their word for it that they found him. Then a few years later we find out he actually made it out and that the Russians lied, depending on when we found out, could have wanted to keep it secret so not to further deteriorate relations with them. Then we were wed to the lie and just had to stick with it.
I'm not saying I believe any of that, but it's a possible reason.

I’ve heard of this, however, do you really think a German marked plane would’ve been able to fly anywhere out of Berlin without being swarmed by Soviet planes and AA fire and make it anywhere?

Any plane not marked with a Soviet marker most likely would’ve been shot down.
Also, by that point in the war all sides knew what aircraft was there’s or not. And if they didn’t recognize it as theirs, they shot it down.

Stalin lied about many many things during his reign. Most of the things he lied about would have caused great embarrassment to the USSR. If an escape occurred , there is no doubt that Stalin would have lied to the world about it rather than admit the Red Army allowed it to occur.
