quote:Freeman is an amazing actor, but I think I disagree on Shawshank.
Funny thing is that a lot of Morgan Freeman’s famous roles were written without regard to race of the character, like Red in Shawshank and Ned in Unforgiven.
Morgan won it due to quality of acting and they didn’t change the script as a result, meaning the odd bit in Shawshank where he says he’s called Red “maybe because I’m Irish”
It has been decades since I read the King Novella, but I think I always envisioned the character as an AA, though I do not recall whether he (as narrator) ever mentioned his own race. That COULD just be the fact that Freeman was so good that the role transcended race, but “Red” was long a common nickname for lighter-skinned Blacks, and I even had a classmate with that nickname ... which MIGHT be why I had no trouble envisioning the character as AA.
I take the “Irish” comment in the film as sarcasm. by a Black man.

They should make a black Superman for release in Africa, an Asian Superman for release in Asia, and a mixed race, gender ambiguous Supercuck for release in Europe and North America.

I'm not a big comic book guy but didn't Dean Cain play Superman?

To be honest, I'm more pissed about a short Jack Reacher than I am a black Superman. I mean I'm down with Tom Cruise, great actor obviously, but whomever cast him to play the 6'5" Jack Reacher should be punted in the nads, repeatedly.

Make a production with black versions of Alexander Hamilton and George Washington, amongst others, and everyone creams themselves.
Make a production of something where white people play characters who were historically black and you get people losing their shite.
Still lookin forward to a version of Othello where everyone is black but Othello himself is white.

Read the description in the book and I believe Red refers to himself as “a skinny kid with a mop of red hair” within the first few pages when setting the stage for how he arrived at Shawshank.

Kate looking over the top of her Wayfarers with every sarcastic comment was pure gold.

quote:Could be. As I said, it has been decades. But my childhood classmate “Red” had reddish hair as well.

In any case, Morgan Freeman is an outstanding actor who transcends race.

Red was white in the novella but it wasnt integral to the character's identity.
Sidenote, when King wrote black characters back in the day it was pretty noticable. Unfortunately he had a penchant for some ummm...stereotypical behavior. Susannah is Dark Tower literally had a blacksploitation film alter ego
If Red was black he would have talked like Stephen in Django. King is one of my favorites but just sayin

Real talk, is there ANY issue on this board in which you aren't fighting with the minority ? Any topic in which you are just like "yeah okay, that shite is stupid?" IOW do you really hold all the absurd positions, or do you just enjoy the argument?

short Jack Reacher
I read most of the early Reacher books, but probably won't see the movie
I see all the super hero and Lego movies though...
I think (hope) my boy is about to outgrow Lego so

People make the same comments to me sometimes, so I'll jump in. You'll notice that I don't post in every topic. That's likely because I agree with the consensus. It's not fun to jump into a thread and collect a pat on the back. The exception to that is anything Second Amendment related for me.
Now, a thread where I actually hold an opposing view can be fun. Of course, sometimes I'm just pointing out widespread hypocrisy for the hell of it, and I'm a huge a-hole when I do that.
And I think Hank is probably going to be along those lines, although he's not as much of a dickhead as I am and he cares a lot more than I do (which is very little) about getting his points across.
