PLYMOUTH, Mass. (AP) — Thanksgiving is nothing to celebrate for Native Americans, who are gathering in the town where the Pilgrims settled for a solemn National Day of Mourning observance.

Thursday's noon gathering in downtown Plymouth, Massachusetts, will recall the disease, racism and oppression that the European settlers brought.

It's the 49th year that the United American Indians of New England have organized the event on Thanksgiving Day.

Moonanum James, a co-leader of the group, says: "Native people have no reason to celebrate the arrival of the Pilgrims."

Participants will beat drums, offer prayers and make public speeches. They'll also express their solidarity with refugees from Latin America who are being denied entry to the U.S., and condemn pipeline projects and fracking that they say needlessly and recklessly degrade the environment.

I'm not saying these people need to get over Columbus and the arrival of Europeans to North America, but they need to get over Columbus and the arrival of Europeans to North America. They're still sour over events that happened well outside living memory. Guess what, assholes, you're not the first people to be conquered by foreign invaders and you won't be the last. Yes...the way you were treated was horrible and atrocities were committed, but that was also a two-way street. Both sides did terrible things. The Europeans are the ones demonized because they were fighting people armed with bows and arrows with horses and guns.

The Indian Wars were at an end by the late-1880s, well outside living memory. Instead of mourning what was and settling for a second rate life style as a result, how about you join the 21st Century and move forward with the rest of us?

They are better off today with their casinos than they were 400 years ago. They should be thankful for their conquest ...

I tell the Native Americans just what I tell Ole Miss fans about their team:

Get better

This is just as ridiculous as reparations and taking down statues. Social justice is a blight on humanity.

Yeah they're better off now but the US government did royally screw them over repeatedly and broke countless treaties.

They can acknowledge they have it good now but still be upset how their ancestors were treated in the past

Does Moonanum even realize that Thanksgiving is based on a joint celebration of the harvest, not the arrival of the Mayflower?

I often wonder if the left is aware that basically no one on the planet is occupying the ground never trod by someone else's ancestors?

Hell, not even the so called "Native Americans" were native to the land they were on when we arrived unless your only definition of "native" is "shared skin color with the dudes you annihilated to take over their spot".

We should definitely not forget this and learn from it. However, there is a difference between remembering your past and dwelling on your past. They haven't gotten over it while the rest of the world has moved on.

I hate that Native americans were treated mostly like shite but that was sort of the status quo for the time period. Also, Indians did some pretty fricked up shite too not just europeans but to neighboring tribes as well. Rape wasn't "rape", it was just considered getting a new wife.

Also its not like if the early settlers had turned back to europe that the north america indigenous people would still be in control with bow and arrows to this day. Somebody was going to conquer NA and it might as well have been Europeans.

If we ( the European countries)would have conquered S America instead of N America, and cleared the natives out in order to have civilized lives, the Native Americans del Norte, would be clamoring to get into South America.

I get why the injuns are mad about Andy Jackson, U.S. Grant, Phil Sheridan, etc. I get all of that.

I don't get them being mad about the Pilgrims. There weren't a whole lot of bad problems and, let's face it, the Spanish in Central and South America were doing all the raping, killing and enslaving of injuns for well over 2 centuries before we started having our really bad problems up here in Norteamérica.

I'm not so sure about this. Their lifespans would be much shorter and lives exponentially more violent but I'm not certain they are happier now than then. Firewater is kryptonite to them and has made many of their lives waste away. Living in a trailer on a reservation without ever having to work again, while comfortable, has to be a miserable life.
