Our UMC pastors have been largely silent in an official capacity, but the younger one is vocal on his personal social media.
The UMC has been on a slippery slope for a while now. I’m not married to its doctrine, so that’s not an issue for me if we leave. I’m starting to get close to searching for a new church.

Christians are supposed to be in favor of social justice.
Problem is the term "social justice" has been twisted and warped by cultural Marxists to mean the exact opposite of what you would expect.
In terms of the Bible, there is no social justice. Just justice.
My pastor’s wife that I mentioned before has mentioned looking at Biblical Justice in terms of the lenses White Fragility focuses on.
I would argue that, while outside secular viewpoints can enhance our view of God’s truth in the Bible, they are not the lenses that we should view the world through.
i.e. some of white fragility/CRT might be true and I could agree with some of it, but I do not need it to have a complete view of the Gospel as it relates to justice. I need to have the full view of the Gospel as it relates to justice to look at white fragility, and that is not the overwhelming viewpoint from today’s SJW christians.

It's not just this. In the past decade they've tried to infiltrate with Marxist screed (Jesus was a socialist!) and the green dragon (tree huggers). Was listening to a broadcast this morning and during a completely unrelated Bible study to a youth group the worship leader throws in "arent you concerned with climate change?". Don't forget the constant attacks by the homosexuals also.

Hey brother, Jesus talked about this in Luke 8 with the Parable of the Sower.
Sounds like they’re lost in the “thorns”...it’s your role as a husband to lead you and your family to the “good soil”. Means you will (not a maybe) lose friends and family planting your seed where it can grow and bear fruit.
Praying for you.

quote:I have to disagree with the Anglican approach. The reason sola scriptura is important is because human reasoning is imperfect and tradition often times stems from imperfect reasoning. Only the scriptures, as God’s holy and perfect revelation, have sufficient authority to command the consciences of Christ’s Church.
Three legged stool my friend
Reason and tradition are good guides but only the scriptures stand as the final authority to doctrine and life of the Church.

The UMC runs the gamut
You have some fairly conservative UMC congregations - many of them large and prosperous and leaning conservative. Then you have some far left UMC congregations which are basically UU or social justice advocacy centers. They spend more time building floats for pride parades than picking up a Bible (seriously).
It's going to be very interesting to see what the former do when the split gets here. Obviously a lot of them won't want to side with the leftist congregations, but splitting over the "gay issue" is going to be messy for these influential congregations where a lot of business leaders and professionals attend.
Would have made much more sense for those congregations if the split was not only over homosexuality, but the host of progressive concepts in the book of discipline (gun control, government guarantees of income/jobs, etc.).
Overall, I feel like a lot of non-woke congregations are still being rather pandering. They're still theologically sound and Gospel-oriented, but they're bending to imagined pressure to make racial justice a forefront issue "during this time."
I have no issue whatsoever talking about the strife in the world around us, I think it's silly if it never came up in church services. But I'm seeing a lot of congregations - some SBC for example - just continually beating that drum in a very corporate-manner.
To be clear, they're not talking about abolishing whiteness, but it's like pastors feel pressure to make reference to racial justice and slavery every week.

Yeah, Chris Hodges was terribly wrong to apologize. The few people know that go to Church of the Highlands were very disappointed in him. The woman who attacked him was rumored to be upset that COTH pulled congregants out of the church she attended.

Welcome to the US Catholic Church since the mid 90s.
Not St. Stephen's Pensacola, FL. High Latin Mass every Sunday. Come back to the church you were brought up in with staff who think that way also, who openly from the pulpit seriously question the Pope.

The basis for social justice is the New Testament. Read Jesus' teachings carefully. Jesus identified with the poor and downtrodden. He came to preach the Gospel to the poor.
In Matthew 25: 34-40 Jesus made it clear who will be sheep (followers of Christ) on that day of judgement and who will be goats. "I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in. I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit." "Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these my brothers, you did for me."

So preach the Gospel and teach the bible.... not blm and sj. You just showed that its already been covered in the Gospel.
