In reality, UFC has surpassed boxing in popularity and by some metrics is now the 4th most popular sport overall in the US. It is particularly popular among the younger generations, which the GOP obviously wants to court as much as possible. Unlike the other 3 major sports (football, basketball, baseball) it can be set up as an outdoor event in DC quite easily, making it a good choice.
