Yeah, they would just say that whomever was appointed independent contractor was tainted or stone-walled, but I think enough moderates would see through that charade and start tuning them out if an independent prosecutor (especially if it were someone whom democrats already respect like Merrick Garland) was appointed who then turned up nothing prior to the 2020 election.
