Williams pulled up to the window and told the employee they no longer wanted it, and the arguing picked back up from there.
The woman said Williams drove her and her son home afterward and mentioned she was stopping at a store to buy chips. When Williams came back, she never said a word about a shooting. The woman called police after she saw the shooting on the news. Williams turned herself in and was arrested on July 15, 2024. A Shelby County grand jury indicted her on August 22, 2024 on first-degree murder and convicted felon in possession of a firearm. She was held without bond until the plea that closed the case last week.
Court records show she had been sentenced to three years in prison in 2009 for beating and stabbing another woman.

Insofar as I understand it, the answer is in the very first sentence.
She plead to the Murder 2 and felony possession of a firearm, thus limiting her max sentencing by law.
The US judicial system is built for plea deals not for trial convictions. Hate the game, not the player I guess.
I'm sure the DA figured murder 1 was going to be next to impossible to convince a jury.

She's 47 - the only real question is whether she will be eligible for parole. If not, and I was the victim's family, I would be "mostly" okay with that result. Released at 77 after 30 years in a Tennessee prison is adequate, if underwhelming, for this sort of thing.

We live in a society that doesn't value human life. The murder of children in the womb is promoted. Legal suicide is gaining traction, like in Canada.
Murder is just not taken seriously any more, because the focus is on rehabilitation of the criminal rather than justice for the deceased and their loved ones.

FFS, people get away with far less for killing people all the time.
Recall Wilbert Rideau - now he did kill a lady during the commission of a violent crime (armed robbery). And he did it relatively callously. Arrested at 17, he spent the next 44 years at Angola. He was "the most rehabilitated prisoner in America." That is virtually without a doubt.
And while he was in Angola, cats came in for murder, got released, committed another murder and came back to Angola all the while he was still serving his sentence.
Why didn't bleeding heart Dems let him out before 2005? Because Edwin Edwards had some sort of connection with or otherwise made a promise to the victims family.
(ETA: For the record, if it was up to me, Rideau would have been put to death in the 1960s. His sentence was commuted to life by the U.S. Supreme Court's decision in the 70s.)

It is Shelby County (Memphis) which makes jury trials a little more riskier than almost any other county in the State - not Orleans Parish bad by any stretch, but worse than Nashville or Knoxville.
Plus, the State just instituted a new law requiring certain felonies -like 2d degree murder - be served day-for day. So, I bet more 2nd degree murder pleas will happen.
