I did this thread last year, but idgaf. I grew up around black people. The only time I ever heard of Juneteenth was a few times on ads on WGNO talking about Juneteenth festival/fair. Nobody I grew up with celebrated Juneteenth. If they did, I would have heard. I heard about all the rest of Black stuff.

Mind you, nobody also celebrated the day the Emancipation Proclamation was issued, either. To this day I don't know what day that is.

I contend that Juneteenth is an attempt at a made up thing for reasons I'm Sure I don't fully understand.

But it certainly fits a narrative. To celebrate the day the EP was issued would be to celebrate a white hero. Actually heroes: abolitionists.
To celebrate Juneteenth is to remind of the fact that evil whites kept slaves even after the EP was issued.

I welcome all thoughts on the emergence, sudden in my view, of Juneteenth.

At the end of the day, if the question is whether I celebrate the freeing of American slaves, I do. I celebrate the freedom of all enslaved people, including those held today, if any.

I can't get past the pidgin English of the name.

I hear it and it's full stop. It sounds so stupid I don't want to discuss it.

I’m black. I’m from Alexandria. We had a Juneteenth Parade that led to a concert type gathering event downtown every year for as long as I remember. Used to pass right by my house.

It is not some new creation. It’s not celebrated on similar scale everywhere but most black communities try to do something for it.

It was a texas black thing. That's all. I first heard about it in 94 when I moved to clear lake in my first adult job.

Grew up in Memphis and never heard about it prior to moving.

It's definitely a thing around Houston.

I have never heard of it til recently. I for one don’t understand the opposition to such a celebration and in fact welcome it. We need more holidays and celebrations and this seems like a good reason for one.

Wow, did not know that. Growing up in TX, I always though it was just a TX thing.

Highly, highly doubt this. It isn't new or made up, but it all of a sudden emerged big time last year.

Yeah so it would make sense for it to be a Texas thing mostly. But last year I had white people who never stayed at a black person's house try to tell me it was a big thing. It just wasn't, certainly nationally.

Google trends.

Look at the total history. Basically started becoming known in early 2016.

We talk about our Juneteenth plans around the Kwanzaa tree every year.

My county is almost completely black. To count the white people in the public school, you don’t even need your toes. I never heard about this holiday until everyone else heard about it. If anyone in Virginia celebrated it, it was because someone from Texas started it.

Less of us celebrate Kwanzaa than Juneteenth. Just FYI
