How about keeping it legal to wear a mask. But if you commit a crime while wearing a mask (including assault at these "protests") and are caught, the punishment would be double what it would have been had you been unmasked.

Do you support the notion of 'hate crimes'? I don't, i think it's an unnecessary modifier...as i do in the example you provided.

I’m not going to debate the merits of the law, but I do love the irony.

Why make laws about it when local authorities can handle them just like Auburn PD did.

Plus you have cities that refuse to enforce Federal laws already, they would just thumb their nose at this as well. Creating law for the feels should stop.

I agree with you there. And I also find it ironic that today's conservatives who typically argue that the government is too big and has too much power, want to give that same government more power.

Just make it legal for any citizen to snatch the fricking mask off of any fool wearing one. It would make protests / riots fun for everyone

Any laws protecting them from getting their arse kicked should also be eliminated.

But could it enable LEO to be able to stop, detain, and arrest these people before they have a chance to turn violent?

What are you going to arrest them for if they haven't been violent? Suspected future crime?

No. But it would isolate them from their meeker supporters. And again, I'm sort of on the fence here, but the past effectiveness of these laws merits discussion. These laws killed the Klan. And apparently they have passed court review in the past. Surely someone challenged them, right?

I agree that it sounds good on paper but it could have much broader implications and gives too much power to the government.

Some people use guns while committing crimes. Ban all guns?

Some people use masks while committing crimes. Ban all masks?

Curious how you can be for one and not the other?

Agree. Arrest them for blocking streets, blocking sidewalks, throwing objects, assault, littering, vandalism, rioting and all the other shite they do.

They can be unmasked in their mugshot.

You do know that people are arrested all the time after being stopped and detained right? Would give police a great chance to find concealed weapons, people with outstanding warrants, etc.

Im always amazed how people complain that the police never prevent crime, they just show up once its over but any attempt to get out ahead of it is considered infringing on rights.

Im all for maintaining freedoms and understand slippery slopes. That's why I believe the mask issue should be more of a local ordinance or state law and not a federal thing. If the powers that be in Portland want protestors to be able to wear mask, then fine. Good luck to them. If Vidalia, La doesn't want it then they can make an ordinance and have it a punishable offense

There has to be probable cause for someone to be stopped and detained (4th amendment). If someone is rioting, then they can be legally stopped/detained/arrested whether they are wearing a mask or not.

I'm a YUGE maga guy and I overwhelmingly support police. I just don't think this is a good law.

I agree that if implemented, it should be done at the local level but not federally.
