I can’t remember is it implied that zero was pulling the strings behind the boss’s defection/sacrifice or did zero get power hungry with patriots and wanted to consolidate power.
If I recall correctly, big boss was looking to create a place for soldiers who were manipulated and abandoned by their countries. And I think that’s why they had solid snake destroy them in mg 1 + 2
Sorry it’s been awhile, need to do another series refresher playthrough

No, it was the original Philosophers Wisemen Council, one of whom was the Boss' father.
Zero and Jack had them all killed when they got ahold of the legacy.
The entire "war" between Zero and Jack was over conflicting views on how to best honor the Boss Legacy.
Before Big Boss dies at the end of the series, he expresses how sorry he is for letting it escalate as much as it did. The gut-wrenching moment at the end is when he is too weak to hold the lit cigar in his fingers and starts crying.

Sons of Liberty, which came out in 2001, had a central theme that data and mass consumption of it could be and was being manipulated on a large scale to censor it, controlling thought across the country.
Totally ripped off Kaczynski.

The sequence carries different meaning when you listen to the cassette tapes from Phantom Pain. There's no way Zero could have possibly directed that Big Boss be put in an induced coma after Zanzibarland because he had been brain dead for almost 20 years prior. Even though it isn't stated, it's obvious that Dr. Clark (Para-Medic) did that. Ocelot and EVA worked in secret to rebuild his body using parts from Liquid and Solidus and both took that secret to their graves. Big Boss taking Zero off life support was a mercy killing.
Clark and Anderson wanted to continue the Patriot plan but they were both killed (Clark by Frank Jaeger and Anderson by Ocelot).

Can we all at least agree Raiden sucked arse. I mean seriously, we are playing as badass Snake and then in 2001 this pussy shows up.

That was intentional by Kojima. Raiden was supposed to represent you, the player. By allowing the player to view Snake as third party instead of playing as him, it provided a much-needed perspective.
Of course Raiden grew significantly between Sons of Liberty and Guns of the Patriots.

I’m not gonna lie....I quit the series there. I tried Splinter Cell but it just missed what MGS brought.

Raiden gets fricked over hard between 2 and 4. His own son's birth is hidden from him to protect Rosemary and the child, his body is placed in a cyborg shell, torn apart and rebuilt, and he spends 5 years thinking he is a complete failure. Snake basically has to talk him off the ledge at the end.
At the end of the Solid series, the only major characters still alive are Otacon, Sunny (Olga Gurlukovic's daughter, who Hal adopts as his own), Roy Campbell, Raiden, Rose, Meryl and Johnny.
I like that they finally gave Hal Emmerich someone to love who doesn't die in front of him (Sniper Wolf, his sister Emma, Naomi Hunter)
