Aircraft carrier sent to Middle East after indications Iran planned attack on US forces

The United States is deploying an aircraft carrier strike group and a bomber task force to the Middle East on short notice in response to "clear indications" Iran and Iranian proxies were planning an attack on U.S. forces in the region, a U.S. official said.
Late Sunday night, the White House made a surprise announcement that the USS Abraham Lincoln and a bomber task force were being deployed in response to unspecified "troubling and escalatory indications and warnings."

Its a good show of force
but Iran already knows we have enough assets in Qatar and UAE right across the Persian gulf to bomb the frick out of them.
Any potential attack would be from a proxy in Syria( which we are supposed to be out of) or Iraq.

The U.S. rarely announces this in advance (task force travel plans). Is U.S. intel so good that he's showing the Iranians he knows what they had for breakfast this morning? Is he intimidating them and making them re-think their dastardly ways? 4D??

Well it wouldn't be the first time we have killed Iranian proxies in either country.
Hell we killed like 200 Russian in Syria not to long ago.

Assuming you really want an answer, it is done for a few reasons.
1) Show of force. In this case the force being deployed will have a deterrent effect. You can't get this if it is unknown that it is being done.
2) The fact that a battlegroup is in a theater is not the same as telling them WHERE in the theater it is. Given the size of the battlegroup and the assets deployed, it should not be hard for Iran to determine that information on its own, in any event.
3) Deploying an asset is not the same as instructing the enemy as to WHAT the asset is doing. This is not tantamount to telling ISIS when we will be drawing down forces in Iraq so they can simply wait us out. No information was given regarding the length of this deployment or its mission.
4) Our allies need to be aware of the deployment so they can act in concert with us if necessary. The Middle East isn't a one man game.
Just a few things to consider on the matter.

The draw-down was announced when it happened, not while the mission was still on-going, we had not secured an agreement to keep a force in place, and we hadn't achieved the objectives of the engagement. That said, it does not insulate the action from all criticism, it simply makes it a different circumstance that warrants a new analysis if one is to criticize it.

Reinforced battalion of Russian and " other " mercinaries. Almost completely decimated trying to overrun Special Forces and Kurdish outpost that was guarding a Chevron facility. Marines, Army, and USAF all got into act.
