Bet that there were contributing factors? Why would I do that? I just listed all of the contributing factors.

And once a pilot claims to have visual sighting of conflicting traffic and the controller says “maintain visual separation” then it’s the pilots sole responsibility to not crash into the other airplane.

So yeah, there were other “contributing factors” but it’s 99.5% on the Blackhawk crew.

You may very well be correct, but in my experience, there have always been a number of chains in the aviation mishap, any of which had been stopped could have prevented the mishap.

You identified all the contributing factors? No you haven't.

Neither have you. I’ve identified the most pertinent ones though.

If you guys want to talk about a plane crash with political implications you could talk about the King Air that went down in the Philippines on Thursday.

I listened and initially agreed with you but now wonder why the ATV didn’t tell Heli pilot to drop altitude?

That you know of sure.

I never suggested there were political implications to this mishap.

Lets go back to the start.......why is someone "training" on a helicopter around the most high profile airport in the United States?

What idiot made that decision?

The midair collision between an American Airlines passenger jet and an Army Blackhawk helicopter over the nation’s capital was preceded by months of harrowing near misses at airports across America, as well as increasingly shrill warnings that the nation’s air traffic control and safety system is stretched to the limit.

Just 14 months before Wednesday night’s fatal mishap near Ronald Reagan National Airport, the Federal Aviation Administration received a safety expert report that warned America’s air traffic control system is suffering from quality control issues and staffing shortages that put safety at risk.

That report warned that “challenges, in the areas of process integrity, staffing, and facilities, equipment, and technology, all have ties to inadequate, inconsistent funding. Together, these challenges contribute to increased safety risk and should be regarded as incident precursor."

The November 2023 report also warned that personnel shortages among air traffic controllers were forcing people to work longer hours and make sudden last-minute changes to flight plans that increased risks.

“Overtime is at a historically high level and increasing,” the report warned. “High rates of overtime for extended periods introduces risk into the NAS. Several associated issues include absenteeism, lower productivity and fatigue.

None of that matters if the Blackhawk flies at the right altitude though. It was piss poor airmanship by the Blackhawk crew.
The salient question is whether FAA/ATC QA/PI mechanisms regarding a series of near misses at that location were even processed, much less acted on.

If-if-if-if the helicopter woulda-coulda-shoulda been at 200 feet, a passenger jet would have flown within feet above it, which btw is apparently what had happened in the past .... and apparently in this instance it would have been treated as "business as usual" there. You think tolerance of a series of near misses involving the nation's busiest runway is acceptable?
