After 9/11, documents suggest, New Yorkers were misled about air quality

In the harrowing months that followed the attacks on the World Trade Center, New Yorkers were repeatedly assured that the air around the fallen towers was safe to breathe.
But 10 months later, health officials were still finding evidence of asbestos as much as half a mile away, according to a sample of air quality records released on Tuesday.
The documents, reviewed by The New York Times in advance of their release, include more than 170,000 pages of air quality reports, contamination records and correspondence among city officials. The records were stored in 68 boxes in a city office, shielded from public view for more than two decades and, according to city officials, discovered only last year.
Mayor Zohran Mamdani directed his administration to release the records to the public through an online portal, timing it to the commemoration of the 25th anniversary of the attacks in Lower Manhattan.

Why didn’t the EPA require the hijackers to get an air permit?

Is there anything the US government isn’t lying about?

The city and EPA:

Indeed, city and federal officials, most memorably Christine Todd Whitman, the administrator of the E.P.A. at the time, reassured Americans that the air around ground zero was safe to breathe. Ms. Whitman has since apologized.
A review of news articles and interview transcripts in the days and weeks after Sept. 11 shows that Mr. Giuliani continued to vouch for the safety of the air quality.
“I come down here in the morning and sometimes the odor is terrible,” he said in late October 2001, according to an article in The New York Daily News, which had reported on toxic chemicals and metals that had been released into the environment around ground zero. “You smell it and you feel there must be something wrong with it. But what I’m told is that it is not dangerous to your health.”
In February 2002, Mr. Bloomberg said: “Every test that has been done says the air quality was in acceptable limits. I think some people are just never going to want to believe that.”

So political leaders lied. Shocker.

While the people have the right know... anytime, period... I find it interesting that the muzzie wishes to release such information specifically for the 25th anniversary in "commemoration".
Not unseen footage, firsthand accounts, first responder information.... but a document stating the government lied about air quality.
Again- people should know, but the timing is interesting.

9/11 families just held a press conference demanding that Mayor Mamdani skip Friday’s 25th anniversary ceremony at Ground Zero.
Afterward, they’re taking a petition with more than 100,000 signatures to the mayor’s office, asking him not to attend out of respect because his record and their beliefs do not align.
Respect their wishes.
Don’t come.
You’re not welcome. @NYCMayor

First responders and survivors who were in the area immediately following the collapse all talked about the streets and all flat surfaces looking like they were covered in snow from the ash and dust.
No amount of cleanup was ever going to clear all of that, and anytime the wind would blow or remaining deposits were disturbed in some other manner that fine particulate dust went right back into the air.

It isn't interesting, it is typical.

While I agree with this I also distinctly remember the attitudes of those folks down there working til they physically collapsed from exhaustion.....those cats would have walked directly into Hiroshima with no remorse
It was a different time with different people
This Communist in charge of NY now has ulterior motives

It *was* different, my 26yr old daughter or her friends won't understand that though.
They will probably eat up news-to-us reports of air quality concerns.
Practically speaking, what mile radius of evacuation and for how long would have been needed? Was it *at all* even feasible?

Not in any reality. Look into the process of properly cleaning and disposing of asbestos just for a small area that is exposed. Then, throw in all the other contaminants into the mix.
It was a "do the best you can" type deal, but that fact didn't negate the burden of accurate communication from city officials. Someone made the call to downplay it, probably in effort to allay public concern that would have made the recovery all that more complicated. That was not a valid excuse, though.

I don't recall that and I lived 12 blocks uptown from the WTC. The air was a white haze for several days until a storm system blew it away.

I'd guess roughly a couple mile radius for a week or two but realistically I don't think that was ever an option or ever a thought to anyone down there. You would have never stopped those men from digging while listening to those alerts from their fallen brothers continuously going off

No, but you give them proper PPE so they don’t die from cancer.

The most readily available masks at the time were paper & surgical masks which were not sufficient but offered some protection

Discomfort and Lack of Use: Proper respirator masks were cumbersome and uncomfortable. Many workers left them hanging around their necks, referring to them as "neck protectors" instead of wearing them. [1] (LINK
I am all for taking care of those that need any help after risking their lives to save others.
What I am not going to do is intentionally try to rile folks up or stir up shite on behalf of a Communist Muslim seeking to do harm.
Y'all are welcome to carry water for them all you want but I refuse to
God Bless those that rushed in to help

I think there is a differentiation to be made between first responders and S&R groups and the general public in the area. I'd expect the former to have been aware of the health risks and to have had access to PPE (from what you posted they, at least some, did) and make the choice to use it or not. That is no knock at all on them. For the latter, the general public just trying to live at the time, they should have been made aware by officials to the best of their knowledge at the time. That was their responsibility, to keep the public informed. If they chose not to because it was inconvenient, that should be known and answered for.
All of that said, it is tacky and inconsiderate as hell for Mamdani and his shite crew to press this issue at this time.
