Not true. I've supported my words and arguments with scripture, much more so than those like Champagne, who cite the "Church" to justify their positions.

How would sola scripture have worked up until the 19th c, when the majority of people were illiterate?

Nondenominational dispensationalist = rock n roll church. Church of the Highlands perhaps? No thank you. A church without deep tradition, religious history and beautiful architecture isn't for me.

No dipshit! Never been in the church of highlands and seriously doubt they a dispensationalist

Isn't he the guy who just admitted he was unfaithful to EVERY woman he ever dated? The church may reject him.

Faith Alone. Scripture Alone. Both de bunked. Both heretical views that were unheard of for over one thousand years after Jesus left the Earth and bequeathed His church to us. Stop lying. Stop perverting the truth.

You better believe that or we will kill you literally. Those that didn’t believe what Rome taught was killed. Crusades anyone? Get real and know what you discuss trying to use “history”.

The church isn’t any denomination. The Church is any saved person. That is all is required, they are found in every denomination. Stop thinking there is a governmental church on earth that is the church!!!!

Nothing was passed to The Catholic Church. It’s a writing of history from the people in power hiding behind the might of the Roman Empire.

The RCC doesn’t claim the Bible as it’s authority. It claims the Bible plus. This is what most cults do. The Bible plus the Watchtower. The Bible plus the Book of Mormons, etc.

Feels like we are at Comic Con watching people passionately debate Star Wars legend. Neither side will throw in the towel.

Bible plus tradition that dates back at least to the 2nd century AD. You should go to a Catholic Mass and find out for yourself.
First Reading : Old Testament
Second Reading : Generally a reading from Paul or Peter or James
Third : straight up from the Gospel

Homily

Nicaean Creed.....tell people what you believe

Then we begin the process of consecration the Eucharistic

Kneel

Shake hands

Kneel

Actual consecration and Eucharist accompanied by prolonged kneeling

Final blessing followed by announcements of bingo night and Lenten
fish fry

That's it....no ancillary stuff.

Check us out, we're happening

As someone who has participated in said thread, I agree

If I've learned nothing else in my lifetime about theological debate it is that nobody will ever be shamed, chastised, or insulted into changing their mind on spiritual matters, which are - naturally - our most deeply held beliefs (and feelings).

The only thing either side can do is put their ideas forward and hope for the best. If anyone ever changes their mind, it will be sometime down the road - probably far, far down the road.

Even though I am Catholic, I resolved several years ago that, though I may engage in discussion - sometimes passionately, depending on the topic - with those who hold different beliefs, I will forever refuse to insult or degrade their beliefs. Nothing good will ever come from that. All it does is foster hatred and contempt for our fellow man.

The reason why they were illiterate is because sola scriptura wasn't taught by the Catholic church.

When the Protestant Reformation occurred, Protestants made literacy a priority so that they could read the Bible. Even many Christian slave owners (a horrid shame) taught their slaves how to read so that they could read the Bible.

Factually and historically wrong. This is a complete fabrication. Anybody with a rudimentary knowledge of the History of the Western World would know this.

In the ancient days of the Church, there were no books. Only scrolls. In the synagogues and Christian Churchs they used either nothing or a scroll or two to preach and teach.

The Gospel was spread by mouth and by deed, not by any book. There were no books. All books had to be written by a Scribe, and there were very few of these folks.

Modern scholarship demonstrates that the cost of making even one copy of one of Paul's longer letters would cost hundreds and maybe even a couple of thousand dollars in today's money. Back then, regular citizens didn't have that kind of money.

This reality - the reality that there were very few scrolls and books and only learned clergy and a few other specialists could read and write prose - this historical reality persisted into Modern times - LONG after the printing press was invented in the 1400s. That's why "Scripture Alone" is impossible. God would not require an impossibility. That would be absolutely illogical and that's not God's nature. The people of all of those many hundreds of years could not abide by Scripture Alone because they could not read well enough for it to be possible, or they had no access to any books, not even the Bible.

The Gospel was spread by the Church by mouth (preaching) and by deed (Celebration and Sacrifice of the Mass).

Scripture Alone was impossible. Scripture Alone as a doctrine is not proven anywhere in the Bible. Martin Luther invented it - the same guy who said that Jesus Christ had sexual intercourse with Mary Magdalene and other women He met in the Bible.
