MUW had admitted men since 1982, but has held onto the MUW name. They are having a hard time recruiting students, and they feel like the name is holding them back. They even have men's athletic teams that play for MUW.

Today, they changed their name to Mississippi Brightwell University.

Only one small problem. No one checked out Urban Dictionary.

LOL, ill-advised name. Tried to go for Welty University earlier and her family didn't like it.

I get they need a change but even without the other meaning, it's lame and uninspiring.

This is 2024 so Maybe they did! The name change funding could have come from a leftist think tank.

MBU…underwritten by anyone on the Epstein list.

the MUW Owls are NCAA Division III

they compete in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SLIAC) for all sports except tennis... which competes in the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC)

The W's men's sports are basketball, baseball, cross country, golf, soccer, tennis, & track & field

For those of us too lazy to look, what’s the big issue I’m missing here?

a university which was once "for Women" is changing its name... something it's been too lazy to do for like 40 years... since it does in fact enroll men

I'm sure opposing men's teams become interested when they see a school with "for Women" in its name on their schedule

I’ve had multiple women in my life that went to MUW and I never knew this. I thought it was all women.

Probably not a bad assumption honestly.

I think the new name is solid

imagine being a high school boy's basketball or baseball player trying to impress a college staff and you hear the coaching staff that's taken an interest in you is from the Mississippi University for Women

Did you not read the OP?

The “big issue” is that “Brightwell” apparently means “sex addict” according to Urban Dictionary.

I feel this is multi-layered and I decided to pick another layer

ETA: I feel this all just adds to the total irony of the situation

It’s a state university, funded by taxpayers. There was a SCOTUS case where a man who wanted to go to their nursing school sued them.

SCOTUS agreed with him and they had to start admitting men but didn’t change the name. In the mid 90s when I was going to college, their marketing message was Mississippi University for Women … and Smart Men Too.

It’s basically nursing and teaching degrees (they do offer some business) but enrollment has been falling. They added men’s sports a few years ago in an effort to help attract students. They have flirted with a name change but it’s never happened. They changed it today and the name means sex addict.

Back in the day the joke was that MUW’s football team was awful because they had too many split ends and not enough ball carriers.
