This is a discussion about tariffs. Abby Philips makes the statement that corporations don’t pass corporate income taxes onto the consumer.

How fricking stupid.

They'd be treated the same way. They're both a tax on business and therefore are factored into the price of bringing goods to market.

Businesses will respond with a combination of price hikes, cost cuts in other areas, and reduced profits depending on how elastic demand is.

AP also fails to understand that if we simply import a crappy country's lack of labor and environmental standards nobody here will have a job so the cheap imports won't do us any good.

We finally found a tax left has to pretend not to like. Only reason is that so many of them are bought and paid for by foreign governments, they are beholden to stop anything that helps the US at the expense of the rest of the world's trash countries. Thats why everyone at Act Blue took the 5th when questioned about foreign donations.

I agree with everything you've said. Particularly about how they will skimp out any way they can find to skimp.
I wanted to add to what you said in this part.
Not just labor, but parts too.
One of the last companies I worked for, in a very competitive market. Could not lower prices any further, and raising prices would hurt their market sales.
So they were skimping on parts. To the point that some of the cheap bolts we were using to bolt parts together, would crack under the torque we were using.

I don’t know how he puts up with that. No amount of money could make me want to interact with those chicken heads daily

Both of the talking heads are wrong, but she's more right than he is.

Tariffs have to be paid whether the company is profitable or not.

Corporate income taxes do not. You only pay them if you are making a profit.

Tariffs cannot be avoided by hiring more workers, expanding operations, buying new equipment, etc., all of which increase economic activity, and all of which are tax deductible, which means that you CAN avoid corporate income taxes by doing those things.

They are not the same. The likelihood that a company will choose to pass taxes in the form of tariffs on to customers is much greater than the likelihood that a company will choose to do the same in response to an increase in corporate taxes.

The likelihood is not zero, which is why she was wrong, but it's much less and the two are not the same, which is why he was wrong.

How does the old saying go? Corporations do not pay taxes. Consumers pay taxes. I think it goes something like that anyway.

That's what Neal Boortz used to say.

He was mostly wrong about it, though.

I can’t remember exactly how that saying went but I think I’m in the ballpark on it anyway. I have heard that saying a lot over the years.

No, that's basically it.

It's just that it's at best only partially true.

If you think that corporate taxes are not captured in the price of their products, you are a moron.

You are all fricking stupid

Increased corporate taxes or not, corporations will still continue to raise prices year over year.

We are no longer a country based on capitalism.
We have become a country based corporatism

Corporations have become more important than citizens.

Multiple studies show that consumers carry a massive portion of the tax. A 2020 study published by the National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER) found that roughly 31% to 50% of corporate tax increases are passed directly to consumers via pricier goods.

Workers often pay the price through suppressed wage growth, fewer hours, or reduced benefits. When taxes eat into a company's cash flow, they have less capital to allocate toward raises or hiring. Estimates typically attribute 25% to 40% of the tax burden to labor.

Researchers determined that a one percentage point increase in the corporate tax rate leads to a 0.24 percent increase in retail product prices, and that approximately half of total corporate taxation falls on consumers.

One thing about tariffs is they count as a business expense. Lowering your taxable income.
